Does anyone have any info on swapping out a in-cab tank to a outside tank? I'm not sure what year tank to purchase that will fit my truck, I would prefer to get one that goes in between the frame rails in the rear rather than the saddle tank on the side. I think if I can put it in the rear I can the licence plate flip down and put the filler there?? Anyone have any sugestions/ideas??

'72-D,
Yes: if you value your sanity, leave the tank where it is! The under-bed tank was made of black plastic, and it was mounted on the driver's side ahead of the rear axle and inside the frame rail. If someone makes a tank to go where the spare fits, I don't know about it. And don't even think about putting it there if you ever want to use a frame-mounted trailer hitch!
The factory under-bed tanks filled through the left rear quarter panel such as on my '78 D-150. As most of these tanks were 20 gallons as was the in-cab tank, there is no volume advantage to installing it under the bed unless you can score a 30-gallon tank.
Why do you wish to change it? There is not much storage behind the seat even with the tank gone, and and the tank stays nice and clean instead of rusting out. There is little fire danger unless you are getting gas fumes in the cab; if so, I can tell you how to fix that.

... Not only that, but you'll end up with a hole in the cab and thinking... 'OK, now.... What do I do with THIS?'......

Yep, Jeff you hit the nail on the head, gas fumes in the cab. I was asking not for this truck. My '72 is going to go back to it's original state with the exception of I'm going to stay with the HEI ignition and the 4bl carb. But it will look as factory as possible.
Now for why I asked, I was talking to the wife about what to do with a donor truck if I go that way. She suggested:IDEA:, since I didn't want to send another one to the scrap pile, to do a complete custom job on the donor. That way I can take one original and one tricked out to the shows. If I trick one out it is going to be a fuel injected project, maybe with a Magnum motor or a Hemi in it. Which means I'll have to put a tank outside the cab with a in the tank pump. I can always plug up and weld a cover over the hole on the cab, thats an easy fix. Of course this is all a long time a way, but it is still in my mind so I want to do research on it before I take that exit off of the highway!:STY:
Thanks for the inputs and Jeff what do I need to fix the fumes in the cab on the '72?

Check the Ramcharger tank. Goes under where the spare mounts on the pickup. You'll prolly have to modify to mount, but you were gonna "trick it out" anyway....
The Ramcharger tanks are plaxtic, but have a steel skidplate that protects them. I've had several, never had any trouble with the tanks. And, I've had class 4 hitches on Ramchargers too, so there ain't no problem there.
Also, an 89 or later R/C will have the factory EFI pump in it.....

Thanks for the info, no problem with modifying the mounts, I can fab most of the little stuff my self in my shop. I do I have one question though, on the RC where does the filler go? I guess I could modify that as well.... Somehow I think the gas tank will be the easiest part of it! But you gotta start somewhere!

Filler neck in the r/c is in the left 1/4, behind the wheel opening. At least, that's where the factory filler is. I guess you could put it inside the bed if you wanted, on the floor, or some such.

Where does it enter the tank though? I wounder if I could get it to go behind the license plate?

'72,
Check the gas tank vent in the cap, the purge line running down the right side of the cab to the charcoal canister under the hood and the rubber coupler on the filler neck. I bet you will find the problem in one of these areas.

I'll check the vent line, but the charcoal canister is no longer in the truck, the bracket is there but I think my grandpa took the canister out for some reason. If the canister is missing would that cause the fumes in the cab??? I think it may be the gasket for the sending unit, but I'll take a close look the hole thing this weekend, I'll have remove the seat as it doesn't flip forward.
As for changing out the hose, you aint lying. I put a small piece the old stuff on one of my old Camaro's...to make a long story short, after 6 months or so the hose cracked and caused a mist of fuel to spray all over the top of the motor causing a pretty good fire, totalled the car.:bawl:

Ron, where in WF do you live? I work at Sheppard... I'm leaving the tank in the cab for the '72, I was just trying to figure out what tank I would need for a donor truck project, that is once I purchase one! I was considering changing my '72's tank out, but I'm going to restore it to it's original, or as close as I can, state.

72,
All I really have left is to install my A833 tranny that has been sitting in my garage for the past year. So far I converted it from a regular cab long bed automatic trans truck to a short bed utiline/stepside short bed truck with a manual transmission. Of course I have to paint it and clean up the interior still. I took some time off of it to restore my '66 Honda motorcycle but, now that's done it's back to the truck.

I think I remember your truck before you put the stepside on it... Wasn't it orange and white like mine??

You got it, It still is white and orange from the front to the back of the cab. The bed is in primer with blue, green, white, black and gold accents LOL. You should check it out sometime, I've got some spares I need to get rid of free of charge give me a shout sometime. If you have a line on another in cab tank I'm all ears. Are there any good yards for parts in burk?

i doubt you can do a license plate flip i wanted to do it on this ford truck ive been building and to do it the tank would hang too low to do it on a truck

80' Thanks for the info... I didn't look at it that close, but I'm thinking (watch out!) about going with a W-100 SB for a donor truck, that is if I can find on that is in good enough shape. So if I go with a lifted 4wd I might be able to drop the tank a little to make it work, if not I can always put in a filler neck out the rear fender, it isn't that hard to cut one out of an old bed and move it to where I want to put it. Or I can just use an aftermarket one, not sure I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there!
If you are still looking for a good 8' bed I think I saw one on ebay last night, can't remember where it was located at though...

yea but its in like s or n dakota all the good beds are always on the west coast for dirt cheap. now a 4x4 might work with a license plate flip but that gas tank might be noticeable underneath the rear bumper
