well i have a 1972 power wagon 318 3spd auto.. the motor has a cam, high performance pistons and runs like a champ... but thats the problem haha. I blew up my transmission (and rear end) replaced the third member, but while the tranny was being re-built the shop went under and i no longer have a tranny... sooo i either need to get rid of the truck, or get a new tranny, and unfortunalty i dont have all that much time or money... what is the best way to deal with the tranny? (i have a friend with a chevy tranny that i can have) so should i get a converter to run the chevy, get a dodge tranny from the junk yard, sell it, or is there an even better answer???

thanks,
steve

Gunnar,

Strictly my opinion: if you want something with a Chevy tranny, buy a Chevy.

My advice: find out who owns (owned) the defunct transmission shop and have a lawyer draft a "sternly-worded" letter to him. You'll have your transmission back so fast it will amaze you.

Most defiantly go after your old trans, even if they went under they have an obligation to get it back to you. If that fails and for some strange reason you can't get the original one back, pick one up from the junkyard, maybe you can trade that chevy tranny in at the junkyard for the dodge one. Just a thought!

Other then that, chevy tranny's need to be in Chevys' not in a Dodge! That would be a cardinal sin in the Dodge world!:loud:

A cardinal sin? Beyond that, in some countries he'd lose a limb.

how would you get a chevy trans to fit behind a 318 anyway?

Chevys belong in Chevys, Ford's belong in Fords, and Dodge belongs in all of them. :D

(Yeeeeesh! WHY would anyone even be ASKING that????? Who would want a 350, when you have a MUCH BETTER and more BULLETPROOF 727???

..... 80Dodge ... You are hereby ordered to sacrifice 3 Chebbies by dropping them into the mouth of Mt. St. Helens by helicopter, or forever be banned from the Dodge Fraternity! ...)

Im NOT SURE.... I'm NOT a tranny guy ... I THINK you need one that is specific to a 4x4 ... Shorter tailshaft or something like that... ???

Tranny guys???

You need a 4x4 trans. I would go get your old trans back from the closed-up shop, they are obligated to give it back to you or buy you another if they don't have it still (ie if they scrapped it ;)), then go have it rebuilt at another shop.

I agree with the attorney idea. The LAST thing a washed up (or successful) shop wants is an agressive law firm barking at their door. You may need to spend a bit but not as much as you might on another transmission.

I am not an advocate of frivolous lawsuits by any measure but the handful of times I've "lawyered up" have worked very well.

4x4 trans is the only one you can use, but it can be from a Ram Charger as well as long as the tail sections are the same size.

ooo ic... well the reason i cant just go back and get the tranny is cuz its a lil more complicated than the shop going out of business... the guy who did it is/was a friend of a friend who worked for the shop. it was a side job so it was cheap, but the dude got evicted from his house right around the same time and no one has seen him since... its more than likely that the dude sold the tranny... i just left the other stuff out cuz i didnt feel the need to go into detail lol.

That don't sound like fun, but look on the bright side you get to go play in the junk yards!

Post up your needs in the classifieds here and a couple other sites. Dodge guys are all alike. There is a fella within 250 miles of you that has three in is shed, one in his shop, one by the barn and a buddy who still has that one from that blue truck..... or was it the yellow one.......no......that was a big block tranny........yup it was a green truck.

Mark my words man; 250 miles radius. If not for free prolly cheaper than the rebuild or j/y price. He drinks cans-not bottles. Get a couple cases in your pocket before you go to his house.

Having never flipped through these classifieds until just now let me repeat: post up your needs. It appears the classifieds are congested with johnny-home-dicker mods and spare tires (i.e. suprchips galore).

Shy of posting your need for a non-cosmetic part you could spend days wading through fodder.

I swear man- 250 radius. ;D
