I would start by changing the fluid in the diff, use a good 75 - 90W gear oil like Mobil 1 (my opinion!) and make sure to add a posi-trac additive. That should help with it.

Do you have the 8 3/4" Chrysler rear axle?

I'm guessing you do...if so, you'll need to suction out the oil that's in there since there's no drain plug and no rear cover to remove. Then put in fresh (I use Valvoline 80-90 gear oil). Have a couple quarts on hand.

You can use a clear poly hose and one of those little gear pumps that you put on the end of a drill to empty it, you'll be empty in no time. As for filling it, just top it off until you can stick your pinky finger in the hole and touch the fluid level inside, I always put the additive in first. Hope that helps...

I dont have the 83/4 rear end. Mine has the cover but do I need to take the cover off? also could this be a suregrip rear end and if so where would the casting numbers be?

if you're trying to find out if it's a sure grip jack the back end up and spin one wheel by hand if both wheels go the same way your golden, if not your dancing with a one legged broad.

Yep sounds like you have the suregrip... Is there either 2 plugs (one towards the top and one towards the bottom) or a single plug towards the top on the cover? If there is use the plug on the bottom to drain (if it has 2 plugs, take both out, much faster drain time) and the one on the top to fill it. If there is no plugs on the cover there should be a plug on top of the case off to one side that you can use to suck out the old oil and put in the new stuff.

As far as the numbers go, boys correct me if I'm wrong, but I think on they are or should be on a tag connected to one of the bolts that holds you cover on, some of them were also stamped on the axle tubes as well..

Both will spin... What 86 was saying, if they both spin in the same direction, you have a sure-grip. If they spin in opposite directions you have a regular open differential.

I assumed he meant they were both going in the same direction!

assumptions, they make an ass out of you and me!

Well, Casey should have been a little more clear on his answer... ;)
Just didn't want him to think he had something he doesn't...
