As you can see from my Avatar, the Dodge is my plow truck in the winter. I have a question about pulleys and belts that maybe somebody can help me with.

The plow pump belt-drive system on the 318 motor in my '73 Dodge is currently set up so that the pump belt is driven by the water pump. Looking at the Fisher diagram for my motor, I see that the pump is supposed to be driven directly off the crank, not the water pump, and I was told by a Fisher tech. that running the belt off the water pump is "hard on the bearings" of the plow pump. Too many RPM's, I guess.

So...I want to fix it and luckily the drive sheave for my motor that bolts up to the crank pulley is still sold by Fisher. However, I may need some help/advice on how to set this up because it looks to be like there may not be room for a third belt on the crank (right now there's a fan/alternator belt and also a power steering pump belt).

Here's what it looks like from above:

Driver's side:

Passenger side:

And here's the Fisher diagram:

As you can see, they don't show the power steering belt on the crank.

Is there going to be room for the third belt down there on the crank? Do I need to remove the second, outer pulley on the water pump? Can I adjust how far out the fan sits if I need to make more room?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

My '71 van has the same belt setup as yours, assuming thats the powersteering pump.
I an additional crankshaft pulley that was for an aftermarket A/C system. It would probably lineup with the unused puller on your waterpump.... I'm not sure if I still have it but will look for it as it might be what you need to run your pump directly off the crankshaft.

Yes, that's the p.s. pump over on the driver side.

Fisher sells a special "drive sheave" that bolts onto the crank (#24 in the diagram) which I've ordered. But I'm not sure it will fit--seems like I'd have to remove the outer pulley on the water pump (which used to drive the plow pump) and then figure out a way to space the fan out far enough.

What part(s) would I need to do this? Easily available? I've never messed with my pulleys before. Can you just remove the fan, remove the unused pulley behind it, install some sort of spacer, and then bolt the fan back on?

I suspect there is a spacer between the 2 pulleys on the waterpump... If so you should be able to remove the fan and the pulley that isn't in use and reinstall the fan with the spacer.
The spacer on my '71 van is 1-7/8" long with a 4 blade fixed fan. (The extra crankshaft pulley mine had did fit under the fan.) My '78 has a 2-5/16" long spacer with a 5 blade flex-fan like in you picture.... So different length fan spacers are made.

M-cook,

Try Bouchillon Performance Engineering:

http://www.bouchillonperformance.com/

They are the "go-to guys" for solving Mopar pulley problems -- and they seem to love Dodge trucks!

Maybe they can help, maybe not, but it is worth a try. They have lots of solutions for a varitey of Mopar maladies -- they might even be able to help with your dirveshaft issue if you have not yet resolved it.

Good luck.

Thanks, I sent bouchillon an email with pictures. Looks like a great resource. I notice they've had a whole line of repro. pulleys made...they should be able to get me on track here.

It appears to me that your alternator is out of alignment.... There should be a spacer between it and the head which I don't see.
Your pulleys look fine unless that liquid rust got them.
You can use a longer fan spacer if needed, just remenmber the fan itself will flex toward the radiator so leave at least an inch to the core (You need this to get a wrench on the bolts )and be sure the end of the blade tips clears the radiator tanks also as this is were the fan flexes the most.
