Junkyard. Unless the dealer happens to have one, I don't know of any new/repos/etc...

Take a look at JC Whitney (http://www.jcwhitney.com/Replacement-Gas-Tanks/600002073.jcw?in_dim_search=1), and see if there is anything that works.

does anyone know if the v-8 trucks have the 20 gal tank & if so does anyone if the tank/sender unit will work for the /6. By the way my trucks an 82 d150,so anyone know what years might interchange w/it & has this happened to anyone else?

my 82 d150 with the v8 has a 30 gallon gas tank in it, I don't know about the sender, I am still waiting to replace mine.

some of the v8 shortbeds had the 20 gal tank. You can also put in the 30 gal, straight swap. I put the 30 in my 85 short bed years ago, don;t remember any probs with it.
They will fit,up 'til they went fuel injected , I think 88 was the first year for the EFI.
IN other words, 81-87 will fit. Never seen one split before.....

Forgot to mention, my 85 was a slant-6. I did not have to change sender unit when I put in the 30 gal tank, and it came from a 318.

mine split @ seam, but the 30 gal does work though & it has to from a short bed though right for correct fit? They are hard to find, but i found a site that really helps w/parts it's [www.car-parts.com]. amazing how much hard to find stuff there is on there.

Bigdog, when I put the 30 gal in my slant-6 short-bed, I don't remember if it came out of a shortbed or long. This was like 20 years ago. I was worklng in a mopar-centric junkyard back then, and I just went out there in the yard and grabbed a 30-gal tank, stuck it up under the truck. I really don't remember having any probs with the install.
I don't even think I changed out the sender unit.

found one out of a 85 w250. got it for $75 w/sending unit out of a auto recycling plant(lol). Looks a lot like the one on my truck so it better work or i'll be mad. oh ya i'm not 100% sure on how to do this, but isn't there a way to check to see if a sending unit is working. thx.

well, you can always pull the one out of the new ( to you ) tank and plug it in to the wire loom on your truck. Then actuate the mechanism by hand, whilst yer wife/girlfriend/mistress watches the dash gauge. Or maybe all 3 can watch the gauge.
However, if all 3 agree to watch the gauge, I bet you can think of something more interesting to do than messing with the fuel tank out in the driveway.....
If it doesn't work, check the dash gauge by MOMENTARILY grounding the hot wire going to the sending unit to a good chassis ground, whilst any of the 3 aforementioned helpers watches the needle on the gauge to see if it flicks up. DO NOT under any circumstances leave the wire grounded for more than a moment, it'll burn out the guage.
The ignition key needs to be in the "run" position, engine off.
Good luck with the swap, let us know how it goes. I'll be out of town til Monday....
