I got a heard from a friend, of a friend of a guy three times removed from an ilegitamiate red headed step child, that Dodge's contract with Cummins was coming to an end and they were looking at Catapillar engines in the future.

Anyone else hear aything even remotely close to this?

Catapillar this time eh? It used to be they were loosing the Cummins to Ford because Ford owned Cummins. Also a bad rumour. Chrysler will be with Cummins for a very long time. Tell your friend he needs to find some better people to get his information from :)

Cummins got the contract for the 1500's next year for the small V8 diesel. I am doubting they are leaving Chrysler anytime soon.

Cummins has been the major diesel engine supplier to Chrysler since the 1930s
I doubt seriously that they're going to go looking for someone else now, especially since the Cummins engines have been so successful in the Dodges.
Beginning in 2010, there will be two more Cummins engines added to the Dodge stable: a 4.2 V6 and a 5.6 V8. In tests so far, these engines look really promising for their hp, torque, and mileage. The V8 is going in the 1/2 ton pickups for sure. Don't know about other applications. The V6 is rumoured to be replacing the 3.0 MB V6 in the Grand Cherokee and will also find its way into the Durango and possibly Dakota. Caterpillar has recently decided NOT to continue making any "on-road" diesel engines beyond 2009. They think that the cost of meeting the new 2010 emissions standards for on-road diesel engines is just too much. They will continue making diesels for heavy equipment used off road but their diesels for on-road applications are going to be acquired through International/Navistar and probably simply "badged" as Caterpillars.

Until we see the new HD, I'm just going to believe they are all rumors.

I kinda thought it was a load. Dodge and Cummins are too much a part of each other to go away.

Can't be Cat. They are getting out of the OTR engine business.

There are two threads in the rumor mill section; one for the Dodge-GM rumor and the second is for the Dodge-Nissan rumor.

Our new ambulances use Cat's in the Sterlings. They have an exhaust scrubber that filters the exhaust. After the filter gets clogged, you have to either drive highway, or high-idle the truck to burn off the particulates, a p.i.t.a. so imagine that in a consumer truck

What model Sterlings?

The Cummins 6.7 in the Dodge trucks already has the DPF.

And the CUMMINS in the Sterling trucks has the same system. The 4500/5500 Sterling trucks are assembled on the very same line as the Dodge Ram trucks in Salito Mexico and are the same trucks except the grille and badges. They don't have a Cat in them.

This is almost as bad as the idiots hat still believe Ford owns Cummins.

Cummins and Dodge are like Burgers and Fries… Chrysler could cut almost every line they have except Jeep Wranglers, and there would still be Dodge and Cummins working (together) Dodge works with Cummins to make those engines for them. The Cummins engine is really more Mopar than most will ever realize. Just like Dodge/Chrysler has many of their components made by other companies, the Cummins engine has almost more involvement from Dodge than anything.

I think if you do a little research, you'll see that the relationship between Dodge and Cummins goes back to the 1930's. To my knowledge, Dodge has been building trucks with diesels about 80 years in some form somewhere. All of their diesel engines have been either built in-house by Dodge, by Perkins (a subsidiary of Cummins), or by Cummins. By far though, the majority of them have been provided by Cummins. I can't see that relationship going away, especially with the avid following that the Cummins diesels have!

Cummins make a great diesel, it just the DPF system on these trucks that give all the problems.

Sterling is no more and Cat OTR engines can't be ordered anymore.
Navistar and Cat are working together to build a Engine It will be a Cat block and everything else will be navistar, But will be Urea injected.
Cat got out of it because it wan't worth the company to meet the 2010 emmisions when their OTR engines only made up of 3% of cats Sales.

I can’t find it ????
((Perkins (a subsidiary of Cummins))

((relationship between Dodge and Cummins goes back to the 1930's))

I found this
Europe vehicles. The English company was started in 1932 as F. Perkins Ltd., and in 1933 they sold 35 lightweight, high-speed diesel engines to Commer, which would eventually be purchased by Chrysler. By 1936, 140 employees had cranked out 556 diesels; the following year, P4 and P6 engines were launched, the latter designed for marine applications. Charles Chapman, technical director at the time, was credited with engineering these series.

During late 1930s, the Dodge Company introduced the 14 cylinder trucks which proved to be major breakthrough for the company. The company also introduced newer and more improved versions of trucks during the year 1939. But due to the Second World War the company was shut down. Later in the years from 1945 to 1949 a number of 6 cylinder trucks came into being which were named the ‘Power Wagon’.

1939 brought a complete redesign, with streamlined styling. After that, prewar changes started. In 1940, engineering started on a military four wheel drive
truck, leading to the first stock light-duty four wheel drive pickup in 1946; these were made in a new, massive truck plant. Dodge also made their first diesel truck, using their own diesel engines. Only two automakers made their own diesel engines for their trucks before World War II: Mack in 1938 and Dodge in 1939.
Dodge had good reason to brag about their trucks; while some competitors upgraded their smaller, lighter vehicles to create 2-ton-and-up models, Dodge made many more changes to make their bigger trucks tougher and more durable.

Yes, my mistake. I was trying to go by memory. Perkins is owned by CAT. The article that I was trying to remember info from was one that I had read last year in one of my diesel magazines - Diesel Power, I believe. Anyway, my main point was that Dodge and Cummins go back a long way.

Cummins diesels were first used in the Dodge Rams in 1989. In 1978 Dodge put their first Diesel in a Ram, the Mitsubishi 6DR5.

The 6b series of engines was developed around the early 80's in conjunction with case. Quoting wikipedia, "The 6BT 5.9 L B5.9 aka the Cummins "12-Valve" was the first member of the "B" engine family to be used in a light truck vehicle. This engine started life in 1984 as an agricultural engine, for use in Case agricultural equipment by a joint venture between Cummins Engine Corp. and Case called Consolidated Diesel Corp."

This jives with what I've read and heard over the years about those engines. Dodge had nothing to do with the original development and design of the series, though I'd imagine they made themselves heard when it came to getting the timing cover redesigned to eliminate the kdp (killer dowel pin) that the 12v's were plagued with.

I always wondered why GM or Ford never went after Cat for a diesel Seems that the
CAT name brand would be a hit like the Cummins has been for Dodge

Because Cat has no interest in making one of their engines light enough, or clean enough to meet emissions for pickups.

Haven't heard about that, CAT is no longer making any on-road engines, even in class 8 trucks, because of the strict emissions.

Dodge and Cummins is one of the longest running partnerships in the automotive business. Goes back much farther than the current B series for the Ram contract. I believe that Cummins has been supplying Dodge with diesels since the 1930s.
