I found that my rear brakes will squeak when it's wet out and the car has been sitting for a while. Surface rust. A couple of pulls on the parking brake while driving clear it up in a few seconds.

If you are talking about brake wear (you haven't mentioned year/mileage of your car) then the dealer brakes are just fine. Remember to 'brake' them properly.

While speaking with a Company rep one day, he mentioned a big problem with new brakes. They are not 'finished' curing from the factory. Take the car out, find a nice, long hill, ride the brakes enough so that they get good and hot, do this 2 or 3 times and they'll be fine.

This does NOT mean run up to 100mph and slam on the brakes and loose control/brakes.

Enjoy!

I have a problem with my brakes as well... I have an 02 with a little over 75000 miles on it. No clue when the brakes were last done, ive only had it for a couple months. Anyway, they recently started squeaking and someone told me it was just dust. It continued. Heres my question though, When i first start the car and drive it around normal, they dont squeak that much at all. But after ive been driving on rougher roads, they start squeaking loudly and hissing and sometimes feel like they are grinding. I recently had my car washed and they did an under carriage blast or something... my brakes didnt squeak at all for about 20 miles, then it started again... can someone tell me whats going on?

Brakes will squeel.

Newer pads are made harder to last longer but are noisier.

Like previously said they will make noise after getting moist and until rust wears off.

Also little known is most brake noise comes from the back of pad vibrating against caliper. You can buy some Brake "Quiet" that you put on the back of the pads to help with this.

If you hear grinding of metal to metal, then that is something differant and it's time to pull the wheels off and take a look at the pads.

You should not have to worry about that though, if nothing is wrong and you brake normally, till well after 20,000 miles.

My 99 has the same thing...turns out it's just dust in the brakes & they need cleaned out every once in a while. My brother (a Chrysler mechanic) told me it's a standard issue with this car & just get the cleaning done once or twice a year.

The only time my brakes squeek is after the parking brake is released and I move slowly down the drive way. After that it is fine. Some brake pads are designed to Squeek when it's time to change them.

I have the same problem with the '99 I just bought for my son. As soon as I back out of the driveway, the rear wheels squeal (not metal, like a resonating squeal). It's gotten a little better so I think it's due to rust buildup while it sat at the dealership (plus it's been real rainy lately). It's only got 39K on it so they should still be in good shape otherwise, especially since it did pass Md inspection.

RE: cleaing brakes. Will spraying some brake cleaner in there help with the rust? I'll also try the parking brake idea (under 100mph for sure...).

What I did was just pull the drum spray the drum with brake cleaner and let it dry. Then I hit the shoes and hardware with the air compressor. I had a hell of a time trying to find out what was making the noise. HTH.
