This is my very first post anywere, hope this is the right site. Code p0456. What is that. someone told me it was a gas cap, i tightened it and still the light is on. Also a evap canister or solenoid. The local dodge dealer wnat over $200. to check for a loose or leakey house. Cant anyone advise me of what this code truly is. Seems a bit to see if a hose is off.
Thanks Mike:)

Again ........:WHT:

<<<P0456 Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (very small leak)>>>

I'd start at the manifold and follow the big vacuum line down under to the cannisters.

Cruise control lines are usually hard but ends can leak also.

Gas cap sealing is common.
Did you replace it???

It is much cheaper than time spent crawling after hoses.

For overkill.
Here's a link to another trucks Evap system.

Good diag info.
It gives you an idea where your $200 will go.

Good Luck,
Tom

this is a very very common code and problem

the very first step is to disconnect the negative battery cable then turn on the headlights then turn off the headligts then re-connect the negative battery cable, start the van and let it idle for 5-8 min without touching the gas then take it for a 20 min drive. if the light comes back on in the next few days you can start to look for the problems listed below.

it will happen if you fuel up the van with it running and the ecm decides to run a diagnostic test on the evap system at the same time. very very common this is why you should ALWAYS turn off the engine during a fill up.

the gas cap is almost never the cause

it is almost always the hoses under the air filter box. they will look fine but have small dry-rot cracks in them, it can also be the larger hoses connecting to the canisters under the van

uner the hood near the radiator is a sticker that shows the routing of the evap hoses

lastly if you must take it to a stealer/shop make sure they do a SMOKE test first. if they don't know what that is or say they can't/don't do it than run as fast as you can away and go somewhere that can!!
