my '98 5 speed makes a grind as you shift from 4th gear to 5th. 1-2-3-4 are fine, no issues, but it will grind significantly UNLESS you do this from 4-5. tool along normally in 4th gear, when you want to upshift, push in the clutch, take shifter out of gear, clutch again, shift to 5th. no grinding, no noise. so essentially, i am double clutching.
any ideas why it does this? it does not bother me, it has done it since i bought it in april '05 ~60,000 miles, now it has ~91,000, she runs like a top otherwise. i do it without thinking about it.

Yes, this is called double clutching. You need to do it because your 5th gear synchro is shot.

More common to fall out of 5th than grind, it does occur. Depends on how hard you beat it and what kind of fluid you use.
Normally 5th gear is the weakest gear in any transmission and will fail first under normal conditions. But... if you beat the thing, then your lower gears will usually fail first because they see more abuse.

hum...in all my driving experience i've never had any of those experiences. I guess if you are the worlds worst shifter i could see it.
Actually, I think his throw out bearing is about to take a dump.

I actually know the worst shifter, whenever i let one of my friends drive my car he slams it into gear like he's racing, then when hes about to let the clutch out he revs it up to around 2500 and just about dumps the clutch. I doubt he will be driving my car again.

I would have to suggest something that I have not seen anyone bring to mention yet.
Check your shifter end link bushings. Two on the tranny and two under the shifter. If one or more are worn out they can cause that. Atleast in my experience. Cheap easy DIY fix too! I think the bushings are 20$ for all four at Modern or Howell's.
If any of them are to be shot it will be the ones on the tranny. Due to the oil, dirt, heat and weather.

they could also be missing. i was missing one on the trans, so i got the boogers.

30,000 plus miles with me, and not sure how many of the 60,000 miles prior to me and she's still running strong! also, is there a way to change out the tranny fluid in these manual trannys? if so, what type of oil and how involved is it to do?

Im not positive but their should be a drain plug on it somewhere, just drain it and put new in IIRC it was either 2.5 or 3 quarts. I used 80w90 gear oil when i did mine, has worked no problem since. But it does get a little stiff in the winters but after it warms up its fine.

Drain plug is on the back side of the case. Fill through the hole where the reverse light switch is located (top of the trans, under the battery tray) try not to break it when taking it out/putting it back in. Use Mopar MTF NV-T350 Fluid, or Mopar ATF+4 if you're cheap. (either will work, MTF is superior) Make sure its the MOPAR fluid, not something else. Some guys use Pennzoil Syncromesh, but if you're going to spend that kind of money I would just sling a little more and get the Mopar MTF. You should only need 2qts on a drain and fill.
While the trans is empty, it might not be a bad time to put in new CV axle seals as well. They're cheap.
