I have noticed recently that if I put my truck in gear and hold the rpm at about 7-800 their is a horrible rattle coming from under the truck. I'm thinking the cat, but not sure. My buddy's 99 Dakota does the same thing only at idle. I'm planning on a new exhaust and wondering if I should throw in a new cat or get rid of it.

Mine used to rattle like that too. My problem was one of the welds on the exhaust hanger had broken so my muffler would vibrate under throttle and when I hit a bump. Check that out and I hope that fixes it.

My old 95 did that. I noticed if I stuck my foot on the cat it would stop. Seemed to be the container/skin of the cat vibrating.

Thats what I thought, but never actually felt the cat while it was running because whenever I was gonna do it I had just gotten home and hot metal and skin doesn't work. LOL. Would a new cat fix the problem or is it just a design flaw? I was gonna just get rid of it when I get my new exhaust, but my dad says I have to have one to keep it legal. And a new cat would cost me about 250-300. Thanks for the help! :rck:

my heat shield around my cat is doing the same thing.. could be that.. I kinda bend it a little and then it goes away for a week and then comes back.

I second what "Tank" says. To me, bending or manipulating it every week is worth the $200 to me.

BlackBeast.........in case you haven't fixed your noise yet, there's a thread in another forum that sounds like it might be the same problem. Here's the link.
