2002 Conversion 5.2 Liter

Performed tune-up last week...plugs, wires, cap (brass) and rotor. Changed oil & filter as well and performed chassis lube.

Started the van today and suddenly it's shifting very erratically. Stays in 1st & 2nd much, much too long.

I'm about to remove the doghouse in order to inspect the throttle rod.

The check engine light is not illuminated...therefore no codes that I know of. WifeAce has to use this van to deliver the JrAce's to school next week, so I have a slight sense of urgency.

The way this is acting, it reminds me of the time the GM dealer forgot to reattach the speed sensor on my Pontiac Grand AM. :VHOT: Disconnecting the speed sensor changed nothing with the exception of giving me a check engine light which has now been erased.

Any ideas?

Does your's have a kickdown cable that might've gotten knocked off when you did the tune-up?

No kickdown cable that I could find.

My local mechanic referred me to an honest tranny guy (now that's an oxymoron) early this am. His diagnostics lead him to believe it's solenoid related, so he's going to drop the pan, perform full PM service and evaluate the situation from there.

I'll keep posting until this situation is remedied.

Well, the news gets worse.

Dropping the pan revealed a lone snap ring. Mechanic is not sure which of the eight it might be...so replacement of said ring and the solenoids is now up to $1k.

Hope the kids can adjust to a couple weeks of mac-n-cheese. :grum:

If your mechanic can't tell you which snap-ring it is how can he put price of $1k on it and the soleniods?
I would consider a new mechanic unless he can identify the snap-ring before proceeding.

Which snap-ring is probably irrelevant since the tranny has to come out and apart no matter which one it is.

It sounded like the snap-ring was in one piece. (No mention of breakage)
Did the mechanic try to pull codes?

Snap-ring was intact.

Engine wasn't throwing specific codes...but after running for 15 minutes the tranny sensors indicated an internal temp of -4°F instead of the normal operating range of 180-200°. He pointed out a couple of other things during our test-drive that I can't remember 'cause I was driving.

I've never used this tranny guy before but he comes highly recommended from my trusted mechanic. Mehopes we can get this back today (& under $1k) as :loud: WifeAce is becomming increasingly impatient.

If the snap-ring was intact and about 2" in diameter it would most likely be a servo retainer snap-ring.
A low temp reading could be a bad temp sensor and/or wiring... This needs to be fixed.

Well, we've got the van back.

As it turns out, the snap ring was in seven pieces.

Both solenoids have been replaced, the tranny basically rebuilt and the cooler flushed and showing no blockages.

Final cost: $998.68

Ran like a dream on the way home from the shop. :rck:
