We got really lucky - the torque converter in our '73 motorhome exploded 1/2 mile from our house. We were able to limp it home and park it where we wanted...
We didn't know it was the TQ at the time, of course. Took apart the whole 727 and found no source of metal (steels looked great, friction material looked almost new, bushings looked great...), so we cleaned it up and installed a shift kit. Took down the TQ to clean it out and...clunk clunk clunk clink clink tink tink tink tink tink....
We couldn't have aligned the tranny to the TQ with it bolted to the flexplate - everything inside was exploded and the stuff could shift all the way over in any direction.
So I got lucky and remembered a salvage place a few miles away that specializes in Dodges and we swung by there. He asked lockup or non, # splines and what size flexplate?
This was a Saturday. His rebuilder was closed, so he ordered it Monday. We had it Tuesday for $110.
Of course, we turned in the old as a core before either of us thought to take pics, but...
Today's the day to put it all back together. Hopefully I'll remember to take a few pics this time....but anyway, wish us luck
Oh, Nate - you might have noticed this place on your way to your buddy's place - it's B&B Salvage on 214 ;)
