Ok guys. Im not sure why it is but since I installed the new engine. I noticed an increase in gas mileage. I drive 32 miles one way to work 3 times a week. Thats 6 trips X 3 days. Thats roughly 190 miles. On the old motor I could just barely squeeze them in without needing gas. Now since the other motor has been installed I can drive the 190 miles and have enough gas left to make the trip two more times. Thats quite a jump. What would we guess is the reason for this? 167K miles and 40K miles? LOL that might have something to do with it lol. I don't know but I like it!!! Later

Its probably because the old motor was tired 167k miles is alot, naybe the head has something to do with it to, but wouldnt a ported head be better for mileage? Since I replaced my motor iv noticed that i get somewhat beter mileage than the origninal one. Form 147k to 80k. but 190 miles per tank is bad if i remenber correctly a neon has a 12.5 gallon tank and that averages out to only 15.36 mpg's. my last fill up i was at half tank from 3/4 (only used 1/4 of a tank) and had 106 miles on it and that comes out to 33 mpg's. I cant wait to see what i get for mpg's once I get around to puttin the downstream o2 sensor back in.

Did I mention I am also getting the DS o2 code also! LOL It seems to me that the car uses more gas to make 6 trips @ 32 miles each than it does if I just put all the miles on at once. Like the trip I took to the mountains here a few weeks ago. I drove around 260 miles up and back on the same 1/2 a tank that only gives me 192 miles if they are short trips. It takes about two and a half hours of driving to get there and the average speed of 60 mph. Give or take a few mph in spots. All in all I can honestly say I am happy with it. LOL

My freind in his Hyundai can drive to the mountains and use twice the gas as I do. Even when I had the old motor. It got around 20 mpg on long trips and that sucked.

maybe the head has something to do with it to, but wouldnt a ported head be better for mileage?
No, a polished head and stock cams (or custom grind smaller) would yeild better mileage. When you start porting things larger more air gets in and more fuel is burned. You can also screw up porting a head and actually make less power while using more gas.

I will give you all a real mpg reading soon as this weekends over. I have over 120 miles on this tank and the needle just moved down to the 3/4 mark.

As of now I have the stock (Not ported) head and crane #10 cams. The only performance parts thats not installed from the last motor is the head and valve springs.

There isn't alot of difference in the way the car runs as compared to before.
Just maybe a little off the top end. Lower end is better and the mid range is about the same.

Soon as I need to put on a new head gasket or what not. I am going to have the ported head re-installed. Maybe! I kinda dig the MPG im getting. LOL

What kind of gas are you using 87? i just hit my 3/4 tank mark today and have 96.8 miles on it so that equallr out to 30.99 mpg's but most of that is on ahighway going up hill,so im surre that had a huge impacaton my mpg's. Oh and im runnin just the cheapo 87 from m&h.

Judging mileage by the fuel gauge is worthless. They are horribly inaccurate. I honestly wish I just had a warning light to let me know when I was around 1/4 tank, and just go off the tripometer for the rest.

Example:

'97 would go about 80miles before it hit the 3/4 mark. My current car, the '99, when it had the non-tach cluster, would read 1/4 tank when I had only gone through 5-6 gallons of gas (12gallon tank). Swapped to a 8k tach cluster and now it will hit the 3/4 mark with about 140miles on the tripometer. Here's the kicker... Both my '97 and my '99 averaged mid to high 30's for mileage.

Only good way to measure mileage is to set the tripometer and fill up at the same pump every time. Different pumps kick off at different times, up to a 2 gallon difference I've found. That explained why I would alternate getting 32mpg one tank, and then 42mpg the next tank on my '99 when I first got it. Keeping a running average is another way to accurately measure fuel economy.

I always run 93 octane. The mp pcm calls for min 92 octane. It's hard to find. 93 isn't.

As of now I have just above a 1/2 tank and 198 miles.

What rice said about it being inaccurate is true. i found out because yesterday after work when i got home it was still on the 3/4 full line and today when i left it was a ways below that line. I think the best way to find mpg's is to take the number of gallons put into the tank when you next fill up, and divide that by the miles on your car. it only works tho if you completely fill it though, and doing what rice said using the same pump as last time since they do cut off at different times.

Im am not realy trying to figure out my MPG's. This was more of a comparison between the two motors than a MPG thing. At 198 miles I was in dire need of a fill up on the old motor. Unless it was a long trip! Then I could squeeze a good deal more out of it.

I am just blown away at the mpg increase I am seeing. I have owned this car since 00 and have gotten to know it well. When my fuel light kicked on (on the old motor) I had about 3 gallons to go before it was realy empty. I have never in my life been able to squeeze more than 10 gallons in the car.
Normally I would get 9 gallons if I was super low. Looking at it that way I was getting around 22 mpg on short trips with the old motor.

Right now Im sure that I could drive to work 1 1/2 more times before I would need to fill up. That would be about 100 more miles. So going with that figure and adding the 198 thats already there. Gives me 298 miles before I would need gas. Even if I added 10 gallons of gas my mpg's would be just at 30 mpg's. At 9 gallons Id be looking at 33 mpg's.

Also take into consideration that I have the 3.94 gears and I like to drive around in 4th gear most of the time. Unless I am in cruze mode. A normall day back and forth to work for me I will see speeds anywhere from 25 mph to 80-90 mph. Sometimes alot faster for short distances.

Forget the mpg rates mate and just floor dat sucka! lol Thats what Im talkin bout Mate!!! I save enough gas Mon-Thursday. On monday morning I park my car and it usually sitts there until friday morning when I go back to work. Trust me tho! During those three days I drive the car, I don't show it much pitty!!:D However I do show it a little more pitty than the old motor. Im not wanting to break it just yet so I can throw parts at it again.

If everything goes right Im looking at getting the Energy or Prothane suspension kit. 170K on the stockers, it's time to replace em.

Ummm all i have to say is good luck. I hear its a bitch and a half. Some advice iv read on the org is to have a torch and an impact handy, otherwise its not gunna get done.

Id like to do this some day but I lack the tools needed, like the torch and impact.

I see!!!! Well Im sure the torch is the easy way to get them out! LOL As far as the impact and torque wrenches. I got that under controll. I couldn't imagine it going smoothly.

I ended up putting just over 290 miles on the last fill up. It took 10 gallons to fill her back up. Right around 29-30 mpg.

Don't forget a bushing press.

I've been putting of doing these.... I suppose I'll need to bite the bullet eventually.

Its not getting any warmer and winter is coming, so unless you have a garage or do it soon youll have to wait till next year.

I refuse to do any kind of automotive work (unless nessasary) after August. Hunting season is just around the corner. Beside that I need to focus my finances someplace else for a while. For one getting out of this run down match box I call home.

^^^^ what do you mean? theirs more to life than neons???? Lol j/k. I know what ya mean i have no garage so their is no way any work gets done on my car in the winter unless its in a heated garage. As far as a house goes their only gettin cheaper, since no one can buy them. Make sure to get a good loan and snag a nice house with big ass garage.

They really don't pay me squat at work, so I'm going to take advantage of their heat and lifts to work on my car during the winter. Oh, and their bushing press too. And the alignment rack. ;)

Iv got a question for ya's howcome when the weather is crappy like right now (heavy rain), my car idles like a turd and wants to almost die? It started happening after i put the new motor in. It also does it after it rains or if their was alot of condensation during the night, and on super hot muggy days, would it have something to do with all the moisture in the air? Thats the only thing i can think of.

I had that same trouble (before) I changed my motor!! Does the car idle and run just fine once warmed up? Mine did. Just that first initial start up on a cool damp morning. Usually only lasted till I made it out the driveway. If I started it up and took off without letting it warm up it just might stall if I have to stop within the first 300 ft. I couldn't figure it out at all. Like you said only on damp cool mornings. Thinking about it now makes me wonder if it's a MAP/IAT sensor problem. Seems to me like it would be the only sensor that would pick up on it.

Rice_Eater is lucky enough to work at an automotive shop sounds to me! You may not get paid much but you sure got some good benifits!!!!! LOL Like use of the shop.
I can't realy work on my car at work. It's an industrail chrome plateing shop that makes hydraulic pistons and cylinders for Caterpillar.

So, just gettin to something a bit off topic but with the mortgage trouble in the usa what is the average gross income there for a guy say 30 years old? Just curious.

Beats me Mate!
I know that the pay rates in WV could be compared to getting hammered by a Jack Jumper!! ;) It hurts!
