tranny with 50k dropped pan and seen nothing but matalic sludge. now what?? everything good after filter fluid change but gonna return... fluid dipping like mad in front where tran meets engine

Your front seal is shot and the tranny has to come out to change it. But from the sounds of the metal sludge, you're looking at a complete rebuild anyway.

If there aren't any big chunks of metal, but a fine "powder" of metal in the pan, then that's just normal wear in my opinion.

I tend to agree with Nate. Sludge is very normal. Dark brown burnt fluid isn't a good sign though, it means that the trans got too hot.

If you are using ATF+3 in that tranny, then top off the fluid level with Lube Gard. This will really prevent the fluid from going dark brown or hitting a hot flash point.
