Greetings,

My 1991 Dodge B250 318 engine air condition checks out fine as far as pressure and cold air when it's on. The clutch on the compressor turns off randomly. Mechanic told me its an electrical problem. I know its supposed to cycle but it just does'nt come back on. I've replaced the wide open throttle cutoff relay and checked all of the connections. I have replaced the pushbutton, fan switch, and the wiring harness in the steering column (because it was heating up to where a small hole melted in the bottom of the steering wheel assembly). Whats left now is that the fan switch sometimes gets hot along with the wiring harness when on high and seems when that happens the compressor turns off. I'm ready to rewire the thing and bypass the harness in the steering column. Any ideas ?

You could have a broken wire in the clutch coil on the compressor itself. When it shorts to ground it will draw more power than normal, explaining the burning wires. When it isn't shorting to ground, explains why it won't turn on. Motor vibration could be what's causing it to make and break the connection.
