I'm assuming 6 qts or there about. It did not have a manual.
What oil and filter is recommended for this model?
Is there a site or link here that can provide additional info (tech spec's and such)

Some folks use synthetic oil and some don't. I personally use Havoline 10W40 in my '94 wth a Purolator Pure One oil filter. I can't afford to use synthetics since there a bit more expensive and since I change my oil regularly I can't see the extra expense anyway. At 157,000 miles she's running great. My 5.2L takes 5 quarts.
Don't forget to have the chassis lubed as well. I do this every other oil change.

LJ -
There are lots of manuals - both owners and service - on Ebay, many for a very reasonable price. Here's an example for your van - only $15.00 Buy It Now.
My 5.9 usually takes just over 5 Qts. during a change. Maybe 5.25 Qts.
The recomended viscosity, at least for the '98 model year, is 10W30. I use Valvoline regular (non-synthetic), but that's just my preference. Also I use Mopar oil filters, but again that's just me. Mopar P/N 05281090.

My '90 5.9 takes just over 5 qts too, and I use Purolater regular filters or Wix, whichever I can get easier. Recommended is also 10w30 for the '90.

there may be a vent between no-5 and no-6 on the cap. if its easy to take the rubber vent off the cap. plug it with j-b weld and put back on. that vent lets moisture in and cause a miss fire. if you get a moisture inside the cap use wd-40 or stsrting fulid spray in side the cap to clean out the moisture. the most important thing about oil is to have lots of zinc in the oil. i have done some searching on the internet on oil, filters, additives. i like to have oil as thick as i can and it still start in cold. so here is what i use, 2001 dak v6. valoline premium blue 15w-40 oil. purolator pl14670 pure one filter, use only a pure one filter that is shown by the p in the part no. then you need to go to zddplus.com site and get some zinc from them. my truck starts ok in the winter, but we normaly dont get below 0 f.
i did have trouble with 20-50 not wanting to turn over in the winter.
Doesn't having a lot of zinc in the motor oil screw up the catalytic converter? Just curious.

Thanks for the replies.
I have always used 10w-30 or 10w-40 in my cars for this area (central MS).
Just wanted to make sure it did not require something heavier.
Thanks for the heads up on the links.

BTW, Mopar engines use a "short" style filter, but you can use a "long" style filter which will gain up to an extra quart and more filtering. I use Purolator Pure One P/N PL30001

yes thats the idea why epa got zinc reduced in automotive oil, not desil or motorcycle. but that happens ONLY if the oil moves past the rings. i use marvel mystrey oil in the gas it seals the rings and valves. and starts MUCH faster. but zinc IS a must to break in a camshaft. and if my cat goes out ill just rod out the center.

Oh okay. Yeah I know about the zinc when breaking a cam in. Me and buddy just put a new cam in a 360 and used Rotella oil.
I just heard from a few folks that zinc and converters don't do well together. I guess using a zinc-rich oil in a very high mileage engine would be a no no.

yes that is something to worry about. but some oils have a small amount of zinc
here is a chart that might help. sorry about the formating the 2nd number is the zinc. i will try to find the site and post that. a different site that has good info is zddplus.com please forgeve me if i have allready posted the zddplus site

How can I boost the level of Zn and P?
One way would be to use GM's Engine Oil Supplememental additive. By our calculations, between .5 and .66 oz of GM EOS has to be added to each quart of oil to raise the Zn and P by 100 ppm each. But be careful, more is not always better. Too much and it will cause damage to your catalytic convertor and possibly other emissions controls. Although not as concentrated, STP 4-cyl treatment (the red bottle), is easy to find and inexpensive, and doesn't have the viscosity improvers (thickeners) of the blue bottle STP.

Punch in your vehicle info here and you will find capacities and fluid requirements.
There is a mistake on the motor oil capacity fot 87 Dodge D 100 5.2 V8.
It is 5 quarts with out filter.:gr_patrio

Moe,
Interesting....about the Zinc.
What does that mean for motorcycles? Specifically high performance sport bikes with wet clutches.
Thanks for all the info!

sorry i didnt explaine. most motorcycles dont have a catconverter.
iam not sure about desiels. some may have them and some may not. as for me iam going to run as much zinc as i want. cats were put on in 1975 and all at once zinc is a proublem? they ( EPA ) made automotive oil makers take out most of the zinc in 1999.

Zinc became a noted problem with newer desiels that use cat cons. Older ones didn't have cat cons and had flat tappet cams that needed zinc to break-in (High-shear area). This is why there is a new grade of desiel oil for those with cat cons.
This expains why peaple use oil for older desiel engines to break-in cams of the flat lifter variety... Mopar made a supplement to do this also, I remember seeing it refered to in an old factory service manual.

on motorcycles that has the clutch in the engine oil, the clutch needs zinc to work right. so using the wrong oil will change how the clutch works. i read a story about a dude with a honda that put the wrong oil in and the clutch had trouble working. a far as iam concerned you need zinc in every engine.

Did you notice that Huskvarna 2 stroke oil has about 1/100th the phosphor and zinc of most oils listed? I assume this is for new chain-saws and weed-wackers with cat cons. and no clutches like a motorcycle.

weed-wackers have cats?

I think so as some suppliers (Northern farm equipment) won't sell 2-cycle equipment to Ca. resisidents... I know new chainsaws in Ca. have Cat cons. that are nothing more than a spark arrestor screen coated with Palladium of some othe similair heavy metal.
