I have a 97 Neon DOHC. I drove the car for about 30 miles on Saturday then while turning into a parking lot the car shut off. I tried restarting it but it turns over and unless you keep your foot on the gas it cuts out again. Code was 72-Catalytic Converter Efficiency Failure. So we took it out and still same problem. Anybody have any clue as to what it could be?

Try to remove the catalitic converter and see how it runs. Almost sounds to me like the cat is clogged up and not letting the engine breath right. Thats where I would start. If the problem was only the ds02 sensor (the one that monitors the cats efficiency) going bad the car would run. I have had the same code along with alot of other people who's cars run fine with it. I would be almost sure that the cat is plugged. That is if 72 is your only code. Good Luck

Sorry should of said it more clear the first time that the Catalytic converter has been removed. We removed it yesterday and still no difference. We also noticed today that it has an oil and transmission leak.

Well i was thinking it could be the idle air control valve but that has nothing to do withthe cat. The reason i say the iac is because having to push the gas to get it started and to keep it running. Try unplugging the iac and start it, see if that does anything for ya.

Not having a cat is the reason you have code 72.

Now go unhook the vacuum line that operates the EGR solenoid. If your car runs normal with the line unhooked, your EGR valve is stuck open. Typical problem.
