I see that in the past on this forum there has been talk about removing the silencer ring from the turbo... I was wondering how many of you guys have dont it and what you think about it? Are there any cons to removing it (aside from a louder turbo whistle)? I want this beast to sound like a damn Kenworth.

Mine has been removed from my 99 for 138,000 miles. Sounds great. Of course I also have a 5 inch exhaust so I do sound like a kenworth.

Just took mine off this morning.. pretty easy.. there is a little more whistle to it, but not as much as i thought there would be.

If you are still using the stock air filter in the stock airbox, you won't notice a lot of additional whistle. I am running a K&N filter in my box, with my silencer ring removed. My ring has been absent for about 150k miles. I love it. In fact, I also modified my airbox a little to draw in more air, which also increased the whistle from the turbo. You can actually hear my turbo spool up from 100' away, outside the truck.

I have the K&N inside the stock box. I was thinking about take the whole box out and going with the cone filter and baffle (especially if its going to mean more whistle) :rck:

I am looking at going with a cone type filter as well, or something like the Scotty II System. Check out the attached pic to see what my airbox mods look like. (Disregard the salt film on everything... haven't had a chance to detail the underhood area after another cold Ohio winter.) Although I think I am getting plenty of air, with the snorkel gone and the extra holes, I think I am getting too much hot underhood air.

where is the ring located is it in the air tube or in the other hose that goes the the turbo???

If you take off that huge rubber black tube that goes to the front of the turbo and look inside the turbo you will see the turbo fan blades. Before the blades there is a ring and a round insert in front of it that keeps the ring in place. I just took a pair of needle nose pliers to remove the retaining ring, then the silencer ring pops right out. Its a breeze to reinstall if you dont like the extra whistle. Taking it out might take you all of 15 minutes. Ill post some pics in a bit.

Mine's gone and I also removed the sound baffles from the big intake tube. Man that turbo sings now! :D

I took mine out last night. After looking at it for awhile I came to the conclusion that it was there for more of a reason that just noise. If you look close before you take the ring out, the ring is beveled to direct the air smoothly into the turbo fan. After you take the ring out you can see that the area that the ring covers is recessed back under the fins of the turbo making the path the air has to take not near as effective.

My thinking is its a lot more effective in than out.......I put it back in.

I did take the baffels out of the tube though and that gives it a little more turbo whine. :D

Hey Dodge-Em ... what do you think of putting the silencing ring back in? I still think its better out... perhaps this is just a matter of personal preference..

ssfx,
I have had my silencer ring out from day one. I also installed a BHAF and a 4" exhaust. You can actually hear the turbo whistle in the exhaust. Sounds like a Kenworth! :rck:

It's funny to see people turn to look when they hear me coming up the road. You can tell that they are expecting to see a tractor trailer coming at them. That turbo is loud now. My wife even thinks it sounds cool.....

ssfx,
Look at my gallery and I have a picture of my BHAF so you can see what one looks like. The filter is Purolator A45090 and the Pre-filter is from Outerwears.

No gains from removing the silencer ring... but I don't think there would be any loss from it either. I have mine pulled out as well as removed the baffles and elbow in the lower boot and an AFE Intake Kit and that turbo sings like a champ. I thought about doing an exhaust, but I figured with the stock 4" setup on there, why bother. That all together with my removed muffler, and it does sound like a big rig and get tons of looks over the shoulder when I'm approaching and as I pass by. :) :rck:

The ring takes a lail playing with... but once I got smart and decided to use two really small screw drivers, it was out in less then two minutes. As for the baffles... I pulled the tube out, pryed the end off, pulled the baffles off and then super glued the top back on and put the tube back in. Oh, and the elbow out of the tube and into the turbo, I had a white plastic piece inside it and took that out as well.

The older styles are even louder... my roommate did it to his 98 and he said it was too much for him and put it back on... but he also thought the 40 series on my Hemi was too much too. :)
