My buddy has a neon sitting in his backyard that he has nothing to do with. So i can pretty much take it, but the downside is there is no engine. And we assume the 5-speed trans is still good.
It has been sitting there for atleast a year if not longer.
The Year is unknown but its a neon r/t, white w/ blue stripes.
So my questions is, should i go after it to become my daily driver? How much could I get a stock replacement engine for? (new or used-low miles)
and any other things i should check out before decision time?

Im here in dayton the only place that had a 2.0 dohc was walts and it was around $750, a 2.4 was cheaper around $500. Is it a 2 door? What shape is it in? And what is your goal, mpg or hp or a little of both?

if you go over to neons .org you should be able to pick up a used engine fairly cheap, probly around $500 or so. You could even take it to part out and make some good money, people are always looking for a good shell and good condition r/t parts.

Finding a 2.0L DOHC is going to be harder than finding a 2.4L DOHC. You can do the swap, but won't get quite the same fuel economy. 2.0L SOHCs are almost a dime a dozen, and if you don't mind having a little less power you can swap the DOHC head onto the SOHC block (same block). Only difference between that and a real 2.0L DOHC is that the compression will be slightly lower (around 9.1-9.3 ish?) because DOHC engines came with domed pistons to make up for the increase combustion chamber size of the DOHC head.
Year is easily found out... 10th digit of the vin. X=99, W=98, V=97, T=96, S=95. If its really and R/T I believe it should be a '98 or '99.
If your getting the car for free there is nothing to decide. Pick it up, get the title in your name (there won't be tax if the selling price is $0.00), and decide later. Even if you decide you don't want it, part it out or sell it for scrap.

Its been some time since i've seen the car; I dont recall if its a 2 or 4dr. My main concern is mpg, and reliability.
It's about an hour drive from where I live so I wont be able to make the drive until probably next week, but i'll be sure to post my findings.
As long as i can get an engine that will mate the the trans and ecu without trouble, i'll be happy. But I really need to find out the year before I can start matching everything else up huh

The tranny will bolt up to any 2.0, and as far as i know it will bolt up to any 2.4 including the srt-4 2.4. And for the ecu that will be the harder part of it as it is different between the sohc and the dohc, if ya didnt already know that. And the wiring harness is a little different between the two also. And if it is a r/t you should swap out the trans with a 3.55 one for better fuel economy, it will have a 3.94 now if it is infact a r/t.

I could get you a Dohc 2.0 for $200 and some labor. Thats what I paid about a month ago for mine. He still has one. The only thing is I had to pull it out. Well I got it ready to pull out and then he drove his tractor out and hoisted it up out and drove it over to my vehicle. It would be quite a drive but would save you some cash I think. Im not sure what side of OH your on but I can get into Marietta OH in less than an hour.

Mapquest says it's a 4 hour 25 min drive from where I live to your town. Thats if they were the correct directions. It's about a 25 min drive to the junk yard from here.
Before you decide to drive all that way let me tell you about the car some. It's got 116K miles and has been crashed. It ran good and can still be started up and listened too. It sounded fine to me. There are some gaskets that need replaced and the time belt should also be replaced along with the water pump.
When I went to the junk yard it was to buy the above car. The neighbor kid owned it and crashed it the same night my water pump took a dive. Instead of getting it I chose to pick the one from the other dohc coupe he had. It was said to only be sportin 40K miles. It also looked as if it had never leaked a drop of oil so I took their word for it and got it even tho it had been sitting for two years.
One good thing about it too is it's an ATX. If you go get an ATX engine you already have an upgrade for your MTX. That would be the throttle body. It's a good deal bigger and not tappered down.

Im not exactly sure but after picking one up, loading and unloading it. I would have to say around 400lbs give or take a few. LOL
The only way to get it for 200 is if you go out and pull it yourself.
