I think i have a problem

Ok so yeah my car seems to slip but I'm not sure if its due to the transmission or what.

1996 SOHC Neon (bought used)
Automatic
No modifications to the engine (that im aware of)
Plugs and wires have not been changed
Its on its 3rd transmission
The highest speed I have gone in it is 63. Not sure if previous owner has gone faster.

What usually happens is that after I go up a hill or push it too hard I have to manually shift it into 2nd or else it has a major jerk when it shifts into second. Anyone have any ideas?

I dont know much about auto's but Iv heard of similar problems that were caused by the kick down cable. Its a good place to start.

does it have tranny fluid in it and if so is it the right color and does it smell burnt?
