My '01 Dodge Diesel is occasionally without power for about 1 mile immediately after starting it. I took it in for a transmission service and they said the automatic trasnmission is fine, but their computer came back with this code (Code P1693 - MIL FH Companion Module).

Any ideas on how to figure out what this means. I know the engine is still covered under the cummins warranty, but I hate to take it to a dealer without knowing that the engine is the problem b/c they would charge a lot if it was any other type of problem.

Thanks

I'm in the same boat as you....our 02 2500 cummins does the same...but it will go in what i call "limp mode" while driving....i pulled up the error codes and i had the same pcu 1693 but i also had a ecu code 0216

would love to know why it does the "limp mode".... :VHOT:

I actually have both codes as well (P1693 and P0216). Only P1693 came up when a transimission shop ran their diagnostic, but I learned about cycling the key three times on this web site. When I do that, the digital odometer displays both of those fault codes. I plan to take it to a dealer next week, but I am worried that they will just start changing parts without much assurance that they have found the problem. However, I want to take it to a dealer in case it is an engine problem, because my truck is still under the Cummins 5yr/100,000 mile warranty and only a dealer can honor that.

Let me know if you find out why your's goes in limp mode. If not, I'll post an update after the dealer is done with me.

By the way, does your check engine light come on when it happens? Mine does not, but that's always the first question the service people ask me.

Thanks,
mgleason

An error has been generated in the companion engine control module, or a companion DTC was set in both the ECM and PCM. If you use a scanner you can earase the error in the ECM. Or you can disconnect your battery for a couple hours and that 'should' clear it as well (so i was told). Hope this helps lol. If you bring it to your dealership i'm sure they can fix this :D .

0216 is a timing failure!!! ours isn't under warranty anymore and it could turn out to be quite costly... take it to the dealer asap and get them to fix (if still under warranty) other wise take it to a cummins dealer..they are alot smarter the the dodge guys...

P0216 is mechanical timing failure within the pump and can also be caused by a failing/failed lift pump. Fuel pressure should be checked first and repaired if not adequate, codes cleared and re-driven. if code returns injection pump should be replaced.

My 2¢, but I'm only one of the Dodge guys;)
