I happened to fumble on an old ad stating that a 1975 Dodge Miser D-100 got 36 mpg on the highway and 26 in town. I believe it was a slant six. Now I'm realistic enough to know that it's likely a stretch, but how close is it. Are you slant six guys getting 20 mpg in town?

My first vehicle, purchased when I graduated college for $600, was a '70 D100 shortbed with a /6 and standard 4-speed. I recorded the odometer at every fillup, along with amount of gas purchased and mpg for the previous tankful. I typically got low 20's for mileage, combination of highway and around town, but no way in hell did I get 36 on the highway. I think I may have gotten 30 once or twice on a few roadtrips. Maybe if i'd had a fifth gear/overdrive it would've been possible.
I did give the motor a thorough tuneup every fall, regardless of mileage, and did an interim check/adjustment each spring, so I'm sure that helped. It always ran very smooth and started flawlessly on the coldest winter mornings.

The Dodge Miser I believe gave the best fuel mileage of any full size pickup back in that day. I can believe better than 30 MPG on the highway at a constant 60 MPH. It had a really high geared rearend with that slant. It was by no means a speed demon :)

Those were probably EPA estimates with the latter disclaimer of "mileage will very" and the only vehicles of that time that came close to the estimates were imports with 4 bangers.

I still see my dads old truck in town all the time. Its an 84 and he had it for 18 years. It was never driven in the snow and only got caught in the rain a couple of times. Slant 6 auto.

I don't know about the rest of you but the idea of 20 miles per gallon plus for my old goat sound good to me but I'm likely to get better then stock being I had 0.060 taken off the head

He wanted Cragar S/S but I talked him into the Keystones for almost half the money.

W/ a 1-bbl and a 833 OD and a 2.73 or 3.23 gear, I can see 30+ mpg on the highway.

Speed I think you are doing something wrong lol. Everyone of your posts ends up having the replies within your window, instead of in their own.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've decided to search out an old Dodge truck and give it a try. I've owned a 69 and a 78, but was too young to care about mileage and simply don't remember. If I find one and it works, great!! If not, I'll sell it. But regardless, its gotta get better mileage than my new Ford. I'm averaging 17mpg with it, and it's so technologically advanced that I can barely work on it.
Does anyone know where I can find spec on the old Misers to do a little more research?

You could try searching around allpar.com, they have lots of articles on the older motors and stuff, w/ lots of the old specs......

My 80 had a slant 6 and a 3sp od standard. I don't think I ever did any worse then 20 mpg and probably better lots of times.
