Alright, before I get the dumb ass of the day treatment, I'd just like to say I know this is a stupid question, but that's why I'm here.

Anyways, I replaced my air filter today and it's slightly wider in diameter than the stock filter. It fits into place just fine, but the cover that goes on won't fit snug all the way into place so it's loose. My question is, what's the point of having the cover on? If I were to install an air intake, the filter would be exposed anyways, right?

The only way I even noticed it was loose was because when I accelerate I can hear a deep, "humming" noise. I know this should be obvious information, but it's not to me.

id say that its their to block out liquids and large objects from hittin the air filter just use a few zip ties to tie i dowm harder and it eill be fine. I bet it will be fine with out the cover as well as long as you can keep the filter from falling out.

Yeah, I never even thought of that.

I would like to keep it off actually, but I just don't want to screw anything up. It makes sense to me that you'd get greater airflow by removing the cover anyways, right?

I had someone before telling me that it was very harmful to the engine and even dangerous to be driving without the cover in place because the dirty air wouldn't get filtered without the cover. However, I'm starting to think they misunderstood and thought I was talking about the filter itself.

Basically I'm just too poor to ruin anything. Haha.

i know how that goes, im just to poor to fix my car again.

Alright, I feel like a moron. While taking a closer look, I realized that the purpose of the cover is to retain the airflow coming from the intake duct going into the air filter.

There's about a three inch gap between the intake duct and the air filter, so could I just get some sort of hose and fit it into place to connect the two so that the air can't escape? It makes sense to me, but then again, I don't know a lot about these things.

You have a 2nd Gen right? Airbox does a whole lot of nothing, except make the engine quiter. Taking it off will also do a whole lot of nothing, except make the engine louder and cause the filter to get dirtier a little faster. Your choice.

2nd gen, yes. I really didn't figure it could do much harm in having it off.

Thanks guys.

Other than your filter will be sucking in hot engine bay air rather than cool fender well air.

Also keep in mind your IAT sensor is on the elbow that connects the filter box to the resonator box in the fender well. So you may run rich from time to time, then the computer will correct with the o2 sensors in the exhaust...

Does your drop in filter have one of those "heat shield" things on it? I had one before, if so you could run a little pipe from the elbow to the filter...

The lid of the airbox does what you think, acts as a barrier for engine temp air from going into the intake, but the actual filter box is what the throttlebody is mounted to and what keeos it from flopping around the engine bay.

The comment about the filter lid and the dirty air.. that applied to vehicles like my Durango as the bottom half of the air box is unfiltered air and the filter is one of those flat ones that gets sandwiched between the top half and bottom half of the air box... yes your right.. doesn't apply to you..

How much of a gap is there between the lid of your air box and the bottom? is it's small you could use some foam tape to fill the gap..

The only thing you'll hurt is performance by having that lid off as you would have a warm air intake, which if you baby the throttle once the computer realizes the difference and the thinner air you might pick up a slight, and I mean slight milage gain.

***edit*** sorry if my post seems umm jumpy.. like I say the same stuff more than once... I just woke up and don't feel like proof reading :P
