i found the numbers "4m318-05090505"on my block on the pad just below the drivers side head. there are no numbers on the pad on the lower passenger side of the block. i know its a 74 318. just wondering what these numbers meant. also here are a couple of pictures of my 77 power wagon ive been working on. thanks all.

I ran it on a vin decoder a couple of ways and I didn't get any hits. You have anymore pictures?

From this site I have learned you cant decode the engine block  yea, they give you a rough idea of how its done but even they arent sure, infact no one is sure cause there was no formal way of casting small blocks and all plants did it differently. But anyways read everything on here (yes i know its alot) and maybe you'll get more out of it than I did.

Yours;......4m318-05090505.....
4 is1974 build year, M is for Mound Road Plant, 318 is displacement, 0509 is date of build... which is the fifth day of ninth month, 0505 is the engine sequence numbers built that day.

Book by Skip Gibbs; Truck'n Through The 70's. Unknown ISB number, Unknown publishing date. Its about 8 1/2" By 11" and 7/8" thick of all kinds of great information. Bought it two years ago from the Dodge Connection; ie.-

I have not seen it on the Dodge Connection book catalog page for about a year.

I think the stroke shown on several of those cummins engines is a misprint. If I am not mistaken they were all 855 cubic inches displacement except the super 250. :gr_patrio
