After travelling about 600 miles today, our van started making a high pitched ring. The noise is there even when the car is in park. The sound is coming from the right rear in the area of the tail pipe and muffler. I started with a general internet search and found that it might be the fuel pump. I am 600 miles from home. Is this something that must be fixed immediately and how long would it take? Do you have any other suggestions of what it might be?

Sounds like it could be the fuel pump going. The fuel tank has to come out to change it.It also could be a clogged fuel filter making your pump work harder then it's supposed too. That would be the easy simple thing to try and keep your fingers crossed at getting you back. If you change the filter and the noise goes away, that was it. Even if it doesn't stop it from ringing,it'll help relieve pressure on the pump and hopefully get you back. Unless of course it was just recently changed.

Here's a follow-up. The fuel pump has never been replaced and we have about 75,000 miles on our van. We took our Caravan to a Dodge dealership Saturday morning. The filter was fine. They started the van and let it run for a while but it did not make the noise for them. Then they hooked it up to the computer but could find nothing wrong. We had another 250 miles to go on Saturday. As we pulled into a gas station about a half hour down the road, we could hear the tone again but after filling up the tank, the noise was gone. When the tank dropped to 1/2 full again, the tone was back. We filled up the tank and the noise disappeared again. We are at the beach for a week, next weekend we will head home. I'd like to get back home where I know the mechanics. Thanks so much for your help.
