The "check engine light" has appeared! Not a good sign on a Caravan. I noticed while driving around town that my van was sluggish, just not accelerating well. When I got out on the highway, it would not shift into a higher gear. I immediately drove back into town and called my mechanic. He guessed that the engine light had come on. I wish I knew what the problem was. Has anyone here had the same thing happen to their van??

You can pull the codes that have been set by turning the key on and off quickly 3 times and then wait. The codes will then be displayed on your dash. Post them and perhaps we can help.

My mechanic tells me that I need a new solenoid. He's giving me a price on Monday and I'm thinking it's expensive, maybe not the part, but surely the labor!

If it is the 4speed shift solenoid, the part is about $130 and the labor should be no more than 1 hour based on Alldata.

yes this is very very common with these vans.

your tranny had an error and went into limp home mode which is it won't shift any higher than 2nd gear.

the best thing to do is reset the code yourself and see if it happen again. sometimes it is just a hiccup. if it does come back goe to autoadvancezone and get the code read for free and post them/look them up on this board so that you can be better edjumacated when you talk to your mechanic.

most likely though it will be a tranny solenoid pack replacement and the prices should be close to what was stated above.

I just went thru this 2 weeks ago with a 2000 GC sport.

The check engine light came on and it wouldn't shift out of second gear.

Dodge dealership charged me $333 to replace the solenoid pack.

I had the problem once before and it was an input speed sensor on the tranny
that was replaced for $150.

Good luck!
