If i disconnect the battery for a few seconds to shut off the check engine light, will i loose any transmissinon settings in the computer? I have a 2002 grand caravan 3.3 engine. The light has been on for a long time. the van runs fine. any help greatly appriciated.

Disconnecting the battery will not clear the codes and may not shutoff the light. The only way to turn off the light is to erase the code, using an OBD2 scanner. The light will come back on if the problem is not fixed. Unhooking the battery will not change the factory settings. However, the PCM will have to relearn your driving habits.

The transmission "learned" values (CVI's) will not be erased by disconnecting the batteries. The code(s) will be erased along with the "freeze frame" data stored when the codes were set and the CEL will be turned off, but if you don't fix the underlying problem the codes (and light) will return-- maybe immediately, maybe after a few days depending on the monitor that is involved.

Before you do this, why don't you just cycle the ignition key on-off-on-off-on without starting, then read the codes in the odometer. Write them down, post them here and we can point you in the right direction to fix.
