Well, I've got a fuel leak now and need a new tank. I've got an '83 Dodge Ram D150 318 (with a 30 gallon tank I believe). The closest thing I can find is a 30 gallon tank off of a '88 D150.

Anyone know if these two tanks are interchangeable?

I intend to take a look at it, it's just about an hour drive to pick it up and needed to know if it was worth the drive.

I also found a tank off of an '86 but that's a two hour drive for that one.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

don't know for sure - but.....one thing to consider - in 1988 they went to throttle body injection I think - so they might have put the fuel pump in the tank - I dunno for sure - others might have that answer - 87 and back I would assume would interchange.

the 88 might bolt in and work - with a mod or two - if the exterior deminsions were the same - and probably is - a re-work of the sending unit and pick up might be all you need to do - maybe take the one from your old tank and put it in the new one.

No they won't interchange, TBI/EFI tanks are different. '81-87 should be the same.

Alright I figured as much. I knew they switched over for '88 just didn't know how far down the hill it rolled.

Looks like I'm in for the two hour drive for the '86.

how bad and where is the leak?

you might be able to get someone to weld or braze it for cheaper than taking a two hour ride - or it might be a bad seal

Back in college I did fix a fuel tank cheaply on an old '69 Charger - had a hole in the top of the tank about 1 inch long and 1/4" wide.
I cleaned all the metal around it - applied some JB weld all around it, then cut out some aluminum out of a beer can to cover the hole - covered the aluminum with the jb Weld -and stuck it on the hole, smeared more over it to cover it good - let it dry - held till the day i sold the car.

Well I just dropped the tank about an hour ago. Turns out it's plastic. The leak looks like it's on the seam where the straps go, bottoms all scratched up too. I'd rather just get it replaced for peace of mind. I don't know what the new tank is, it didn't even cross my mind that it would be plastic.
