I was just checking the 4WD out the other day on some of the dirt roads around here. 4H works like a charm and it is easy to get into and out of. 4L is another story. I didn't have any problems getting into 4L, but I had a heck of a time getting out of it. I had stopped, shifted the tranny into Neutral and when I tried to shift the transfer case to 2H, as far as I could get it was into N. After that, all it would do was grind when I tried to shift out of it. I tried to put the tranny in Park but it would grind there also. After I let the truck roll back a ways, it finally went into 2H. Is there some secret to getting into and out of 4L? Any of you guys got any tricks for getting it done?

My '86 has always done the same, I had the 208 rebuilt just for that and it still does it. it is like a syncro thing because it needs the trans in N but sometimes it feels like i am going to break the handle off.

I have a 79 Full time 4x4 W150 and although not quite the same as you I have still have to do the neutral thing and I have found the easiest way to shift between lo(loc), lo, N, H, Hi(loc) is to not stop rolling... just switch the auto trans to neutral and while you are rolling switch your 4x4...
If you are at a full stop and feels locked then let it roll for just a little bit and then try....

Mine does it all the time, and i use it alot. Best to do is put the tranny in neutral or park shut the truck off then you can shift the transfer case to N (since mine has a part-time kit N is what it runs in for 2wd) or whatever and start it back up and put it in drive and off you go, put it in drive slowy though incase there should happen to be anything out of whack but it shouldn't grind or anything.
