YIPPIE...... i think my tranny is dead :help:

it developed this issue saturday.....

ok on saturday it wasnt that bad it did it once on the way from my house on a half hour trip into deleware to my grandmothers house and then back it was fine didnt think much of it....

then i went to a "battle of the bands" thing at my old high school and meet up with a couple friends of mine who i had graduated with last year.. by this time i was starting to notice the truck driving a bit different..wanting to hold out the gears really long basically it was shifting at my WOT shift point of 5500-5800 rpm im like ok this is getting really weird.

so this mourning after church i tell my neighbor who just happens to be an awesome auto mechanic that my truck is starting to act up a bit on the shifts hes like ok let me know if it gets really bad. i tell him bye after staying outside with his son whos my age talking for like 2 hours then head over to my friends house...

by now its really having issues im like o crap and on my way home from here after taking some pics of his new computer that he just got from the money for his old computer since it burned in his families house fire it now wont shift out of second by itself on either up or down shifts...

it wont do it if i manually shift first, second, drive it hangs or if i have overdrive off it still does it... the only way i can get it to shift is by sliding it into neutral then sliding it back into drive :help:

my neighbor is checking it out tommorow gonna hook up his scanner i see if he sees it throwing a code but i think it might be time for this tranny to bite the dust i mean when i opened it up when i got it it still had the factory filter and the original transmission fluid in it at 79000 miles (my face :YO: ) so yea it was abused before i got it but i was still hoping it would live to be the rightful milage of 100000

so yea anythoughts guys?

o yea i was so looking forward to going to the track the for the first time today and this happens.....great

Coul be be the TV cable....might need to replace it. How does the trans fluid look? Color and level?? See and metalic flakes in it?

-Scott

zEus
03-07-2004, 10:05 PM
color is pink smells fine and i dont see any metal flakes its right on the max marker and im not sure about the tv cable its only second gear that is fuxing up

Scottcba1
03-07-2004, 10:07 PM
See if it has any codes.....could be the electronics in the valve body also. How many miles on it?

-Scott

zEus
03-07-2004, 10:38 PM
86000 so about 6-7 k since i changed everything ill be doing my oil soon my neighbor is gonna check for codes tommorow with his scanner i hope its something stupid but if its not ill do all the tranny work i wanted to get done earlier then expected

Scottcba1
03-07-2004, 10:44 PM
My money is on the electronics if they are still stock and or the TV cable.

If it comes down to needing a trans talk to the fastman...I hear he has some awesome trannys for a good price.

-Scott

zEus
03-07-2004, 10:47 PM
ill probally get the news either tommorow night or tuesday....

expect the worse...... hope for tv cable

zEus
03-08-2004, 07:09 PM
well today when i went out with my neighbor it was shifting through every gear early and was not kicking down so he thinks its a throttle position sensor.... he was going to hook it up to his sensor but he doesnt have any of the cartidiges for 98 or newer cars since he hasnt worked on enough of them yet at his own garage to justify spending the money on it. so im going to go to this guy he recommended tommorow

Scottcba1
03-08-2004, 09:01 PM
If it is up shifting but not down shifting that could be VB related or again TV cable related.

When my truck would go up through the gears but not down shift at the stop and felt like it would stall I had to put new electronics in the VB and a new TV cable and the problem went away.

Good luck.....let us know what happens.

-Scott

zEus
03-08-2004, 09:08 PM
well yesterday it was down shifting not up shifting its being stupid

zEus
03-09-2004, 03:21 PM
took to tranny shop today they hooked up the scanner thing and we went for a ride well apparently this is being caused by the pressure solinoid and i believe he said something else too that he would have to order anyway parts will be in thursday and truck will be out thursday hopefully this does the trick will keep you all posted ....

btw he said this was a super common problem with this transmission

Scottcba1
03-09-2004, 08:52 PM
DING DING DING....I think I am the winner! :D I mentioned the electronics on the VB as possibly being the problem. The only other thing I can say is dont fall for any sales pitches. I had a trans shop tell me last year that my trans was shot and that it needed to be rebuilt and if it wasnt done that week I would crack the case or cause serious damage to the truck. Well here I am over a year later with the same trans. The problem that they said I needed to pay $2600 for a trans to fix only cost me $80 to fix.

-Scott :rck:

zEus
03-09-2004, 09:02 PM
o these guys arent a major chain they are a local 2 bay garage shop...... just out of curiosity where abouts does the price of this part usually run i was first quoted 300-400 for the whole install but b/c i was sent their by my neigbor who he is buddies with i quess the quote was lowered to 250-300 when he talked to his manager

btw my neighbor deals with GM nor mopar which is why he guessed wrong according to the other mechanic

Scottcba1
03-09-2004, 09:09 PM
Man that seems to be pretty high. Before I even worked in a shop I did mine for $80 for all the electronics in the VB and did the install myself, with the help of a friend. It is pretty easy to do. I dont see it being that labor intensive. Drop the pan and drop the VB and install everything put it back together. Maybe 2.5hours labor TOPS. We did a shift kit stall converter and VB electronics in 4 hours and that was with dropping the trans.

-Scott

zEus
03-09-2004, 09:13 PM
i might be saying the wrong part names so dont quote me on this and there where two parts he said and i dont remember the second ones name

zEus
03-11-2004, 03:20 PM
well took it in this mourning at 830 got a call at 1130 saying its done and come pick it up.... im all happy woohoo...right

well on my way back home its still shifting funky then i turn on a back road to see if it will pick up WOT b/c the guy at the shop said it was shifting fine for him i hit it it shifts early then i hear a spray spritz like sound and my front seal is gone and the tranny now needs rebuilt

was 200 for the work done today 100 solienoid/sensor, 20 filter and gasket trans fluid,74 labor, 6 tax they willl be deducting this from the cost of the rebuild which i knew i was going to be needing sooner or later when i looked at the tranny is early october when i got it.... just why did it have to come so soon!!

SIMPATHY IS WELCOME

i should be getting a call for the estimate on the rebuild either before 5 or tommorow mourning he quoted about 1500.00 when i left the shop again around 1230

Scottcba1
03-11-2004, 03:34 PM
I would contact Dan The Fastman....I think you can get a performance rebuilt trans from him for the same price or maybe a little more money. If I was gunna pay for a rebuild I would get it done right with all the performance features in mind.

That was rip off on the sensor...I got all my VB electronics for $80(4 or 5 different sensors), $100 for one is nuts. Sorry to hear it didnt help and the truck isnt ready for you to go cruising.

-Scott

zEus
03-11-2004, 09:45 PM
how much of a difference did the higher stall torque converter help your truck??? might as well do all tranny mods

Scottcba1
03-11-2004, 10:24 PM
The stall converter makes for a much more fun ride....helps get the truck in the power range much better.

-Scott

zEus
03-11-2004, 11:26 PM
yea thats what i thought i didnt think that the 2400 stall would be to overly drastic for a daily driver thanks

Scottcba1
03-12-2004, 07:14 AM
no not at all....I drive my truck everyday and 70 miles back and forth to work everyday and I dont have any problems with my 2400. I have had it in for over a year.

-Scott

zEus
03-16-2004, 02:15 PM
well i ordered the Martin Saine Super street torque converter with the 2800 stall from the fastman this mourning i havent gotten back up with the local transmission shop which is rebuilding my transmission since friday so i dont know how long they are expecting to take on the rebuild. Dan said that the torque converter should be shipped out by late this week and then take about a week from that to get here from cali..... i cant wait to get back in the dakota.... o well the ram is pretty cool

Az5.9Durango
03-16-2004, 04:49 PM
2800 huh! Cant wait to see what you think of it when installed!

zEus
03-16-2004, 05:51 PM
yep i figured what the hell why not everyone on the dekphi boards were recommending it and so did Dan and its not like he makes more money by selling me on the 2800 over the 2400 since i wanted the blower version no matter what so i went for it :rck:

Scottcba1
03-16-2004, 05:52 PM
where you able to get the rebuild done for any cheaper? Is it gunna be cheaper then getting a new trans from the fastman?

-Scott

zEus
03-16-2004, 08:58 PM
its gonna be the same if i bought it from the fastman but my parents arent all up on that and these guys have been around for along time so the total repair bill is around 1800 dollars

Scottcba1
03-16-2004, 09:07 PM
I guess you do what you have to do....especially if your not footing the bill.

Good luck!

-Scott

zEus
03-16-2004, 09:49 PM
ill be footing the bill eventually just not yet.... and yes i hope this turns out good

Scottcba1
03-17-2004, 06:42 AM
I hope so man.....$1800 is alot of cash to be spending at one time. I personally would have went with the fastman setup but I know situations restricted your choices. Do you at least know anyone who has delt with this tranny shop your at now? Are they just doing a rebuild back to stock specs or are they changing anything?

-Scott

zEus
03-17-2004, 07:08 AM
yea they are changing it away from stock specs the all going all beefed up internals and yes i know tons of people who have nothing but good things to say about this shop

Az5.9Durango
03-17-2004, 10:05 AM
Cool man, let us know how it turns out.

zEus
03-17-2004, 11:13 AM
how long should i let the tranny rebreak in before i get on it again? i am so looking forward to playing with her again :bawl:

Az5.9Durango
03-17-2004, 11:51 AM
I dont think it matters but I could be wrong. I have never broke one in per say.

Scottcba1
03-17-2004, 10:31 PM
You should take it easy for a few hundred miles just to make sure everything is ok. Figure one tank of gas and you will be ready to hammer on it.

Good luck!

-SCott

zEus
03-18-2004, 08:28 AM
ok i will try to keep my foot out of it for atleast like 500 miles or so as much as possible

Scottcba1
03-19-2004, 04:50 PM
Any work on when it will be done?

-Scott

zEus
03-19-2004, 05:17 PM
well the torque converter will be in like next friday to monday and the tranny will be done around the same time so probally late next week into early the week after all depends on how long the torque converter takes.... i talked to dan yesterday and he was still expecting it to ship out today but he hasnt gotten back with me yet today :(

Scottcba1
03-19-2004, 05:24 PM
Damn that sucks two weeks for a tranny rebuild....man thats a long time without the R/T.

Your a stronger man then me, I couldnt do it.

-Scott

zEus
03-19-2004, 05:54 PM
hey i just have to deal with driving the ram instead..... after driving the r/t for so long the ram feels so heavy and beastly in comparision.... i cant wait to get my baby back... and it will be closer to 3 weeks if you add in the time that it was shifting like a granny was driving it

zEus
03-21-2004, 01:17 PM
Ok the torque converter shipped from Martin Saine yesterday afternoon Dan sent me an email with the tracking number(which still isnt working)....just keeping all that have been helping and interested posted on the progress

Scottcba1
03-21-2004, 05:46 PM
Great man atleast the converter is on its way....one step closer to having the trans together and the R/T back!

-Scott

zEus
03-21-2004, 06:48 PM
the transmission shop said they will be ready for the torque converter whenever it comes in and then they were going to tune it to the converter :) they we already building it under the impression it was going to be under stress from the supercharger and all they also said they were going to put a bigger like a B&M trans cooler on it too

zEus
03-27-2004, 10:02 PM
well this is bugging me all day ive been watching my stall converter come from across the country and i see last night that it came into Baltimore at 651pm im like o yea i will get it Saturday.. but of course it didnt ship out until freaking 318 am so i was all dissapointed but im like of thats not bad its only like a 2 and a half hour drive from Baltimore to here... well it still hasnt showed up on the ups tracking wtf is the guy doing getting layed or something?????? this is pointless but i thought id share

zEus
03-27-2004, 10:04 PM
of course as soon as i post that the package details goes dead

shadango
03-28-2004, 07:48 AM
I do this too...I get all giddy about my packages showing up etc....

Thing is, UPS and every other shipper has a "guaranteed delivery date/time".....

If you pay for ground, it is guaranteed to arrive by a certain number of days.....2nd day, you get it the second day, etc.....

If the package arrives early at the depot, even if its a half hour away like mine is, it will sit there until the scheduled delivery.....And Saturday delivery isnt likely (at least around here) if you rodered ground delivery.....They only do that for 2nd day and overnite I think......At least in my experience....and ESPECIASLLY for large itens...they schedule stuff ver ycarefully so that the trucks run at 99% capacity...no space is wasted.....They dont "squeeze one in" unless it makes financial sense for them....

I have even gone so far as to call the UPS depot (an hour away from me) to see IF I could pickup from there.....They say NO because it is in their shipping channel 'somewhere' and it is a hassle for them to find it....

Ahhhhhh....sweeeet anticipation..... :SPIN:

zEus
03-28-2004, 12:24 PM
yea only thing was i was hoping to get it over to the shop as early monday as possible to hopfully get it back tuesday but if it arrives later then probally wednesday (it still is in transit from baltimore :WHT: )

zEus
03-29-2004, 04:19 PM
THE TORQUE CONVERTER ARRIVED TODAY @ 4:11pm!!!.... i rushed it over to the transmission shop however since it arrived so late im looking at like wednesday or thursday before they can get it in and tuned... i did however take a picture(though very uninteresting it might be) of the stall converter before i took it to the shop for the faithful like scott ;)

i have been dakota'less for 3weeks now :bawl: :bawl: :bawl: :bawl: :bawl: :bawl:

Scottcba1
03-29-2004, 06:34 PM
Awesome! I'm glad it finally showed up. I can understand why it is gunna take the trans shop two days to install the converter and get the trans back in the truck.....you would think a TRANS shop could do it faster then that. Are they extremely busy right now?

-Scott

zEus
03-29-2004, 07:53 PM
yes they are extremly busy right now he was like YES!! when i showed up, hes like you have the torque converter right? and after i said yes hes like "i cant wait to test drive this thing" then we got to talking and all the sudden its time for the shop to close.... lol

Scottcba1
03-29-2004, 08:39 PM
Ok so maybe he will get it together and test drive it tomorrow....that would be nice.

Keep us posted! I know you will be happy to hear and feel the roar of your R/T again! :D

zEus
04-05-2004, 10:04 PM
they said that they were gonna do it while i was having the torque converter shipped but they actually didnt start rebuilding my tranny till today, but that takes a day for them to do so.... give them tommorow to test drive her and with any luck wednesday ????

this sucks i had to drive the sunfire today and will be stuck with the darned underpowered thing till i get my truck back

Az5.9Durango
04-05-2004, 10:29 PM
Well, at least you know you will have it this week. After climbing outa that sunfire your truck will really rock! I know, Im not a whole lot of help...sorry dude.

Scottcba1
04-05-2004, 11:10 PM
Man if I were you I would ride that guys ass till you get your truck back and dont you dare pay full price for this long of a wait! Man you could have gotten the Martin Saine built trans and installed it yourself in the driveway and saved money and had the truck on the road faster then this "trans shop". I have never heard of a professional trans shop taking three weeks to put a trans in a truck, that is outragous.

Good luck with getting it back this week.

-Scott

zEus
04-06-2004, 09:58 AM
yep i wish i would have gotten the martin saine fully built transmission now... on a side note i found that i branch had blown into the side of my house last night in the strong wind and broke the signal ground off my cable causing lag spikes

Scottcba1
04-06-2004, 10:12 AM
If I were you I would be calling that shop every thirty minutes today to see if my truck was done...I would also start dropping hints that you are not paying the full amount.

Good luck!

zEus
04-06-2004, 10:19 AM

04-07-2004, 09:38 PM
if its not done by then bro, just break in there at night, pull your truck out, pile the explosives into their shop, and tow your r/t to someplace that will get it done. ;)

i'd be in there standing over top of them with clenched fists by now. get the tranny broken in and leave some lonnnnng burnouts in front of the shop with the middle finger up :rck:

zEus
04-07-2004, 09:38 PM
lol, im really starting to get pissed...... but i was sick off my ass today just now am starting to feel better i think its a 1 month r/t withdraw and the driving the ram tonight @ 930 was enough to make me fell better for the night

Az5.9Durango
04-07-2004, 10:02 PM
If it were me, I would wait before I paid and test drive the truck to make sure all is ok then drive home for the night. Call the tranny shop the next day. When asked, "Where the hell are you?" or "Where did you go?" Politely express how it felt to be with out your truck for a MONTH and renegotiate the deal... I know its stupid but its all I can think of right now. I dont care for face to face when mad...I wound up in the slammer for 2 freaking weeks.

Scottcba1
04-07-2004, 10:06 PM
yeah the only problem with that situation is it is theft of goods and services and you can end up in the slammer for that as well. I say tell him you arent paying full price and workout what you are willing to pay. If the original bill was $1350 tell him heres $1000 thanks for FINALLY finishing my truck a month late.

first remind me not to piss you off anymore

and they have only had the truck for 3 and the torque converter for 1week and 3days of that but still this is getting rediculous i should have just bought the martin saine transmission and installed it with my uncle would have felt like it was taking a long time but atleast i would have learned something also in the process

LOL! It was a long time ago in a land far far away... The bad thing was I was on the other guy’s property (Wrecking yard) trying to clean out my totaled car and he refused to let me in even after my insurance company called and gave him the green light. I flipped him off at the counter and turned to walk out the door and he jumped me from behind! (COWARD!!!) We fell back on a couch and he got in a lucky punch (Knocked 2 of my teeth out) little did he know, I could still bite so I took his right ear all the way off. I saw him at the hearing and was pleased to see that they didn’t reattach the ear. He was in good with system since he did all of the local police's towing. It took a while but I was found not guilty. At least I got my teeth fixed. He lost his ear FOREVER!!

Man dropping the whole trans to tweak the valve body....this could be done without removing the whole trans. I would tell the owner look it has been almost a month that you had my truck from this point foward you are loosing $100 a day that I dont have it back.

Your going to easy on these guys. Not only are they tieing your truck up all this time but they are gunna give you a big bill I can feel it coming! You have to show them you mean business.

ok this is the problem and the hold up, i went there today and talk for close to an hour and now i need your help guys... this is the problem and short of the suggestion of a new computer which they dont want to do either since mine does have some flash (ill explain if this will help)... Ok the transmission is not building governor pressure, the transmission is now mine rebuilt and has the martin saine torque converter because the guy before me abused it, but anyway the govornor pressure is not building up high enough to allow it to shift correctly it has all new and upgraded internals inside the transmission, the guy acctually built a second transmission which he had to build anyway and tried it in my truck and it did the same thing, now the weird part is it isnt throwing any codes

now time for the questions
a) anyone know right away what the problem is?
b) anyone have a complete wiring diagram for the computer?
c) anyone know how to reset the computer because they cant find this information either and asked if i could help them search

1999 dakota r/t club cab (im posting this on serval forums i need this info as fast as possible)

Scottcba1
04-15-2004, 09:34 PM
man they screwed you over......if it shifted before you took it to them and now it suppose to be all rebuilt and now it doesnt shift they messed up the valve body/or the electronics on the valve body.

To reset the pcm just take the negitive lead off the battery turn the key forward like you are trying to start it and hold it there for 20-30 seconds then turn it back to off. Hook up the battery lead and start the truck and let it ideal for 5 minutes then test drive it.

Good luck.

o and scott it had stopped shifting too before i brought it in i just really dont want to hear new computer... how much is the mopar performance???? im not going to get rid of the other computer maybe i can find out who/ what flashed it and see if it can be repaired

they got a testing tool in today that will allow them to

Scottcba1
04-16-2004, 10:49 PM
Personnally it sounds like they my have screwed up the vlave body. I did the same thing with my truck and it messed things up pretty good. I ended up getting a brand new valve body and a new shift kit to get the truck back on the road.

What kit did they use?

BTW a brand new MP PCM will run you anywhere from $290-$350 depending on where you get it.

zEus
04-16-2004, 11:27 PM
yea well the flash i have now assuming it is the B&G flash has more timing added then the mopar performance and basically my stocker was the mopar performance with a topspeed govornor and a more conservative shift charteristic if i understand correctly, im going to try and see if the stocker is salvagable first just geting an idea for the price, also i should be able to pull enough timing with the msd btm

Guess what guys :) shes back intial impression is wow, shifts are alot cleaner throttle even more touchy, the stall converter seems to be working great, i actually tried 1 2000rpm power brake start to load up the converter and all i can say is daaayuummmm!!! i burned all the way through first and part of the way through second while leaving the thickest black line on the road i have ever done :), i will need to relearn the launch though......... feels great to be back in the R/T nothing against the ram but i defiantly like mine more

ps my internet is down at home cable going into my house has a bad signal at the moment dont know when i will get it back up this time

iternet is back up again we have a faulty ground signal on are cable wire tommorows project....

its even more crazy in the rain....... i have so much more torque now.... and instant torque at that its awesome, if i floor it anywhere between 0-15/20mph (depending on the road surface) i start spinning tires again... other good news is that i can still do 5600+ rpm shifts under WOT with good gas. Im using cheap gas at the moment which for some reason doesnt like to pull the shifts as often, but still even when shifting earlier it is still way faster then b4... i want to go to the TRACK NOW!!!! they want the truck back for 2hours on the 2 weeks of me driving it to check everything out, fine tune it, and change the fluid and filter and im gonna check and see if the installed the trans cooler like they suggested because i dont see it

Sorry man I am having internet problems as well......

Glad to hear you FINALLY got your truck back and you are very happy with the results. Everything you mention about instant torque and all is what I hope from my trans rebuild that will be probably before the new year. I am sure my original tranny is costing my some power but I like to know that it has gone over 90K miles and has never been rebuilt yet. I feel that says alot about how it is treated since I have heard of R/T owners getting rebuilds and totally blowing trannys up at about 30K miles.

Glad to hear you got your truck back! I will have to start telling the boss that I need a saturday off so I can come down to Cecil and race with you.

I was running circle track slicks....28x10.5x15 Goodyears that I got off ebay for less then $50 shipped to my door. They are pretty much spent but my last run on them I was able to cut a 1.9 60' so I will try them one more time before I order up some Hoosier or M/T full drag slicks.

-Scott

zEus
04-25-2004, 09:58 PM
i actually meant rims, i need to be more specific huh???? lol i actually got a hook up on the slicks as my friends girlfriends father is a distributer of hooiser slicks :)..... man a 1.9 i wish i knew what that felt like

o yea he said a 30x10x15 was an easy size to get..... arnt the stock size something like 28" to keep the rearend right?

Scottcba1
04-25-2004, 10:08 PM
Yeah the 30" tall ones will kill your rear end ratio....will make it drop to like a 3.23 gear or something along those likes. You really want to stick with a 28 but I have seen guys run the 26 to get a better gear ratio. Stock height is 28.08".

You can get stock Dakota rims off ebay pretty cheap. I lucked out and got a set for $50 from another Dodgetalk member.

Find out how much your hookup wants for 28x10.5x15 Hoosiers are and I dont want the ET streets I want the full drag.

Thanks!
