i have a 1996 intrepid. a couple of weeks ago when i would start my car the wipers would turn on by themselves for a couple of turns then stop. now the wipers dont work at all but you can see them trying to move slightly. is it the motor or the switch?

For some reason, I think that it might be the switch or the wiring to the switch. You stated that at first the wipers would turn on buy themselves and then stop. This might account for this. If the wipers don't work at all now, it could be the wiring or the motor. If the wiring or the the switch went bad then it could cause the wipers to do that. Honestly I would have them both checked out.

Sometimes the internal windings of the motor short out and this will cause the wipers to not park, keep running, or not work at all. 99.9% it's the motor.

My 97 Intrepid's wipers acted really wierd too, until last week when they stopped working on anything but the highest setting. Turns out there are 2 wiper relays that control the wipers. I replaced the intermittent wiper relay, and they work just fine now.

You can buy the relays at Advance auto and install them in a matter of seconds. If the relays don't work, it could be a problem with the wiper switch or motor.

The relays are so cheap and easy to install that it is the most logical first step in trying to fix the problem.

Good luck!

Next to the battery you will see a small black box. That is the main relay center, and there are several relays and fuses in that little box. If you remove the top and look underneath it, there is a diagram that shows you which relay is for what system.

You should be able to buy the intermittent wiper relay from any of the major parts chains, Advance, Auto Zone, Nappa, Federated, etc. Replacing it is as simple as popping the old one out and plugging the new one in.

Just be sure to ask for or order online the intermittent wiper relay, and you should be ok.
