I fully understand that this is a diesel Engine site, but I was just wondering if their are any mechanics on here that work on larger trucks, or someone that could point me to a forum site that I can find out some answers to my problem.....

I have a 1992 cab over hay truck that has a Nissan diesel engine with a 5 speed Allison w/PTO behind it. The problem is that it is stuck in low gear. It does not have all the new electricle stuff on it as it is a 1992. If I put it in Drive, it will not shift up, and if I try it manually when I move from 1st gear to 2nd, it stays in 1st.

Any and all help would greatly be appreciated......

I don't mean to make ya sound dumb at all, but have ya checked the tranny fluid? I work on Schwan's trucks (GMC 5500-6500's) and we have had problems with them not shifting because of low fluid. It seems like they can't be low at all or they won't shift. I've ran other vehicles w/o tranny fluid before and they've shifted, but Allison's seem like they have to be right at the top to work ok.

Howdy nick02cummins, yeah that was the very first thing I checked. We pulled the pan today, and there are parts of the clutches layin the bottom, so am now working on getting a rebuilt, or finding someone to rebuild this one.

Thanks for the advice anyway Pardner, I really appreciate it. I realllllllllllllllllly like our Schwan's man, and all the goodies he brings, keep him on the road :)

BTW - You wouldn't have an extra Allison laying around the yard would ya ?? :D

Haha, I'll do what I can, that was my next thing was a clutch pack. And no actually we don't, Schwan's wants their old parts back. We ship em out

Its probably a swap out. You sent them your case and they send back the guy that sent his in last week :)

Why didn't I think of that, of course that must be how it works.....I hope the other guy took care of his case :)

Guess I really can't complain to much, this one has 386,000 miles on it.....It was a rollback wrecker before I converted it into a hay truck :D
