I have a 93 caravan with a 3.0 automatic. Heres my situation and hopefully someone can tell me where some parts are located if this model has them.

One day with no prior indication of a problem I proceded to start the vehicle and noticed a slight lurch forward while in park. If it where not from being mechanically locked into park I believe/know the car would move forward in the park position?????

Later on that day after having driving the vehicle for 70 miles starting and stopping several times at different places I discovered when needing to use reverse later that evening that the car moved forward when I put it in reverse and now could not go into reverse regardless of how I positioned the shifter.
I thought it might be a linkage problem and upon inspection found no issues with the linkage/position or transmission fluid.

I drove the car in this condition for over a month putting several hundreds miles on the vehicle. Then one day upon driving the car it would not shift out of second gear. Changed filter fluid with proper fluid and nothing to mention in the pan upon inspection.

My questions are this.

1. can anyone tell me what external relays are used on this model to control shifting and most importantly where it or they are located on my 93?

2. Does this year/model have a input.output sensor/unit on the transmission and if so where are they located?

3. Does this model have a seperate transmission computer and if so where might I find it?

From reading all of the posts on transmission problems and considering my issues I cannot help but think it might be a external problem and I have a parts vehcile I could swap parts with If I knew where and what I am looking for to replace.

Another question for those of you who would ponder this one is ..

Can a person manually control the shifting of the transmission by manipulating any relays that might perform this function?

I think the car is in the limp mode possibly and would think that by manually controlling the shifting cycle I could eliminate internal issues??/

does this sound practical.

thanks for any suggestions..

Is it a 3 speed (1-2-D)or an OD(1-3-D)?
Nothing electrical will keep one from backing up or going forward, just upshifting issues.

3 speed no overdrive.

1. does this year have a seperate transmission control unit/

2. does this year have any external relays that are used for transmission functions/

3. Is the input/output sensor on this year a one piece or two piece unit..

It has no reverse as when put into reverse it does forward. While in park it tries to go forward also.

thanks

A three speed is NOT electrically upshifted. It is totally hydraulic.

No input sensors or output sensors.

It sounds like welded forward clutches, but it should bind up in reverse,go forward in neutral and not let the engine rev in park if they are welded.

Is that what it does?

Thanks for the info on having no input/output sensor as I thought for sure there must have been one/some sense everyone talks about them. And thank you for pointing out that there is no external electrical shifting control scheme as that makes things easier to understand in eliminating my options.

i think what you described my be my issue.

Here is what I have observed.

1. I can move forward when i put the shifter in neutral.

2. I move forward when I put the shifter in reverse.

3. The vehicle ATTEMPTS to move forward when the shifter is put in the the park position but I believe that it is ONLY because it is mechanically locked in that it does not do so otherrwise I think that I would be able to drive in the park position???.

4. I cannot rev the engine very high in the park position because it seems to be in gear working against being in the park position and bogs down?

What do you think????

thanks so much ..

It should bind up in rev if the forwards are welded.(the forwards can't release in rev) You might have the manual valve slipped out of the rooster comb tab. Dropping the pan would verify that.

I am able to drive forward in the reverse position so I will check what you descibe out..

thanks you very much TM as up till now I have been totally clueless after reading all of the posts on the internet..

I will let you know what I have observed later when I remove the pan..

cheers

I reason and hope problem is due to linkage adjustment. I had to pull transmission to replace broken flexplate and leaking rear oil seal. All is back together. I found this series of posts that seem related to my problem. When you said to check the "rooster comb tab" after pulling the transmission pan,...to what are you referring?

I understand there are no internal nor external sensors. Again, it seems to me a mechanical linkage problem but I do not know what to do or what to adjust.

Any help or advice?

Manual Valve Lever Assembly has the "rooster comb" on it.

The tab on the lever assembly should be hooked into the manual valve in the first spool spot like this pic. (arrow is pointing to where the tab is engaged)

So do I understand correctly.....the 'Throttle Valve Lever Assembly' is located on the outside and as I am looking at the transmission, on the top of the transmission....right? So the 'Manual Valve's' head is on the top of the transmission and might be disconnected from the assembly on the top of the transmission that contains the "Detent Spring Screw." Do I have to pull the transmission pan to determine if this is disconnected or can I see this from the top of the transmission?

Ok...after studying the schematic drawings of the 31TH transmission I understand better what you are talking about. Can I see if "the manual valve slipped out of the rooster comb tab," as you describe, after dropping the pan and without removing the valve body?
