Hey guys when I got my 86 a few weeks ago, it came with headers. I don't have a clue what brand they are. The PO had run dual exhaust on the truck and when they put the pipes on, the left (drivers) side pipe turns back "under" the transmission pan befor turning and running down the right side and then turning back to the drivers side and exiting out the rear. On my previous truck, an 85 without headers, the pipes still turned to the right, but in front of the transmission pan, over to the right side and then both the left and right pipe passed "above" the transmission crossmember. When I climbed under the truck, I could tell why this truck has the drivers side pipe passing under the tranny pan, it was because the headers are so long they don't leave enough room to turn the pipe before the tranny pan. I think I may have just confused everyone in trying to describe this, but the thing is as you are approaching my truck, you can see that dang pipe hanging down and running under the tranny pan. Not only is it ugly, but it interferes with the ground clearance. Question is then, are all headers for these trucks that long (i.e., extend back that far) or do they make shorter ones? I'm just before yanking these off and just run standard exhaust manifolds. Your comments appreciated.

I think hooker makes shorter ones or block huggers: http://www.holley.com/types/Super%20Comp%20Block%20hugger.asp
or it is possible hedman may have some:

(BTW what part of gerorga do you live at?)

You can use shorty Magnum headers, if you plug the small air pump holes under your exhaust ports.
And I know what you are talking about, you have long tube headers, the outlet is past the bellhousing.

While I don't have headers (yet) on my truck, Sounds like full length Headers that extend past the back of the block - common for all long tube headers and usually not a problem.
Shorties will work, but another option is to re-run the drivers pipe back and turn the 90 degrees at the back of the trans - right under the output shaft (where the drive shaft goes into the trans), that'll gain a little clearance and you can retain the long tube headers.

Speed, who makes those magnum shorties? It sounds like they are made for later model trucks, is that right? Anyway, they sound like a solution to my problem.
Delray, I'll climb under there and take a closer look-see. What you are saying may work as well.
Ram, appreciate the links.
Thanks guys.

If I weren't going to run long tubes, I would run factory manifolds.

Several companies make Magnum shorties, JBA, Gibson (I think), couple others. Edelbrock probably.

Take a look see at this post - 76D100 has a good pic of the routing I was talking about.
