So I spent all day Saturday replacing the water pump in my '93 B350 van. Got it back together and it leaked a lot. Took most of it apart again and isolated at least one leak at the thermostat and fixed that. Now it seems there is fluid dripping from behind the pulley.
My question is: I'm trying to test this without the fan screwed on the water pump pulley. Does tightening the fan also tighten some seal in the water pump behind the pulley?
The leak could be coming from some other place but it doesn't seem to be the outer gasket or bolts.
Thanks for any insight.

No tightening the fan does not seal anything. There is only one place for coolant to leak around the pulley. Underneath the pump about 1/2 way from the front to back of the pump you'll find what's called a weep hole. If the coolant is coming out of there the pump is no good.

Agreed. Did you buy a reman or new pump?
Also, did you make sure you sealed up that heater hose pipe that goes into the pump real good? This can sometimes be a pain.

I put in a new pump so it seems strange that the pump itself would be leaking. Doesn't seem to be leaking from the bypass hose. That was my first thought.
I'm going to look around at it more today and see if I can isolate the leak better.

That is strange for a new pump to leak, but it does not surprise me. I spent 7 years turning wrenches and have seen bad parts right out of the box.

my 94 had a leak when the water pump was replaced with a new pump. If i'm not mistaken, the mechanic pulled a mcgyver and fixed it with some teflon tape or something. I think it was around a push in tube or something. It's held for at least a year now.
