Has anyone ever seen coolant leak from between the block and the pump housing. I spent a couple of hours w/ a mirror checking t-stat, bypass and heater pipe by the intake, nothing wet. Also the pump is dry. With a flashlight and mirror from pass side by the dip stick tube I see what looks like weeping at a seam I think is the housing.
Is it part of the timing cover, does it have a regular gasket ?
Did I mention its a van.
Thanks for any ideas.

Yepper...there is a gasket between the timing cover and block and yes they can blow out. It happened on my '72 van.

Fix it ASAP since it could be possible for coolant to get into the oil if that gasket is blown.

With 140K on the beast I guess I'll be checking everything all the wat to the chain.

In addition to the chain, I you should do the water pump and bypass hose since they could go next.... Assuming you can afford to.
Just a suggestion since your in that area... You wouldn't want to be stranded for overlooking them.

luckily (sort of ) I have the time, its not used but for vacation, tailgating and taking the crew to grandmothers house. It got heads and plenum pan stiffeners 2 yrs ago. Since it looks like $400 or so I guess I'll have to keep it a year or 2 more.
Thanks for your wisdom.

Over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house we go, the van knows the way to carry the crew......

That was a bad joke.....

There's a really nice "How-To" write up on this site with lots of excellent pics that show step by step what's involved in getting to the water pump and timing chain.
