Father just got an 04 3500 cummins with the auto tranny. He will be towing a 12.5k lbs fifth wheel this summer. He wants to get an anxhaust brake to help out the drives up and down the mountians. I checked out Banks power and they sell what seems to be really good brakes and tranny packages but what will he need and how will this effect the dodge warranty? anyone familure with these things?

STOP! DO NOT put an Exhaust Brake on an Automatic, it'll void any warranty....Call Cummins for questions regarding Exhaust Brakes and use only those recommended by Cummins.....
Go to the Cummins Website for more information....
" Can an exhaust brake be used on the 24-valve engine?
Yes, the new MANUAL transmission 24-valve engine was designed with the exhaust brake in mind. Replacement of the exhaust valve springs will not be required as it was on some models of the previous style engine. (Please note: Current 12-valve-compatible E Brakes designed for '89-'98 model Dodge Rams should not be installed on '98 and later 24-valve electronic engines. Doing so can cause serious damage to the engine.) "
And from Jake Brake (Jacobs) homepage..
" 2003 Dodge Ram Cummins Diesel Exhaust Brake.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Extensive testing has been conducted of the Dodge Ram 48RE automatic transmission with an exhaust brake-equipped Cummins Turbo Diesel. Dodge and Cummins have identified vehicle control system and hardware changes that are necessary before factory approval is given to this application. For this reason, use of any exhaust brake on a Dodge Ram with an automatic transmission is not approved. "
He should've bought a manual transmission.... :help:

Hmm, we both read his manual front to back and both missed that part. Thanks though for the lowdown yo. Maybe a trans brake and coming down the mountians in a lower gear of course coupled with the trailer brakes(of course) is all thats needed? Maybe no mods and trusting the lower gears and T-brakes?
