Hi guys.. I was wondering if some one could help me with a problem I have. I just bought a 98 B3500 with a 5.9 one week ago. with 88k runs great. I filled it all the way up 77 dollars LOL! i got down to a 1/4 tank and the it sputtered like it was running out of gas and then quit running...Pulled back the cover took off the air cleaner sprayed starting fluid in the carb while turning it over still no fire... Is it a full relay .. is it a camshaft sensor..( I was putting her to the limit when i ran into this problem) or a crank shaft sensor.? or is the fuel level to low for the pump to reach the fuel..I.E. the sputtering and then quiting
but how do you explain the no firing with the starting fluid being sprayed in the carb and no fire?? Im I not getting fire????
Please help.. need this van for work.. Ben

I just bought this Van I filled it up 77 dollars. runs and drives great.got down to a 1/4 tank of gas and it sputtered like it was running out of gas.
I spoke to a mechanic he advised to get some starting fluid and spray down the carb while turing the key nothing happened. the engined turned over fine but would not fire.
I was reading other fourms.. is this a fuel relay or crank or camshaft sensor that runs the driver for the fuel injectors? or THe crank sensor that the ECM uses to fire the coil?
or is the fuel level to low for the pump to reach it.. has anyone else had this problem? or are there any pro mechanics that can advise... need this van for work...just moved to Atlanta a week ago my Caravan blew a head and now i buy this B3500 and Now it has quite on me.. Need advise.. Ben

Did you pull a plug wire and test for spark?
Did you check for fuel pressure?

Ben, I hope you don't mind, but I split this off from another post, and moved it to the VAN forum
Welcome, BTW

The fact that it quit when you were at a 1/4 tank tells me the fuel pump is going south, BUT on the other hand she didn't fire when you sprayed starting fluid in the throttle body.
The ASD Relay on the firewall provides power to the fuel pump relay and the ignition. The ADS Relay is controlled by the PCM. There could be a problem with the relay or the PCM.

Im gonna say its the fuel pump. Try adding fuel and see if the problem goes away. Once it reachs 1/4 tank again problem will prob return again, its common on dodge trucks.

Since he just bought this van and he is on his first tank, and probably doesn't know how many miles per gallon he is getting yet, isn't it possible the fuel gauge may be off and he's out of gas. I had that happen to me with one of my older vans. I just throw this out as a thought.

If I recall correctly the fuel-pump module from a smaller tank will fit the larger tank, but won't pickup all of the fuel.
Do you have a large tank (~35gal)? It could be the problem since you don't know the history of the van.
