tried this in ram forum and was told to come here, so here it is. I have a 2000 ram van 1500. recently it started to shift crazy. it wont shift from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd at normal acceleration unless i rev high and abruptly let off the gas. after that shifts fine. will shift fine every time at very slow acceleration. does shift all gears, does not skip. check engine light came on and when i had it checked out i was told it was a governor pressure sensor i think. pretty much gathered i need to 1) pay for rebuild or 2) buy barely used and pay to have installed. anyone have a suggestion? also would it be relatively safe to drive it for a while? if so is there a product i can use as a band-aid? i appreciate all input.

The filter and fluid could just be dirty and needs to be changed. Bring it to a "real" tranny shop and not one of those quick lube type of places. There are shift bands that need to be adjusted when the pan is removed. But before they do any work, ask them if they think the fluid/filter change and band adjustment will solve the problem.

would check engine light come on if the filter and fluid just needed to be changed?

The light came on because the fluid pressure on the governor is incorrect. If your filter is dirty and the flow of fluid is reduced, this could be a possible cause for the incorrect pressure on the governor. So yes, a dirty filter can indirectly cause the light to come on.
