if you plan on changing the belt on other cars by all means save yourself the hassle and buy a serpetine belt tool. it will save you countless headaches.
the 3.8 has a standard tensioner as in most modern vehicles. which you normally could just use a 1/2 breaker bar as a tension release tool. however, on our wonderful 3.8's there is not enough room to get it in!
the purpose built belt tool is slim and has a long handle for good leverage.
if you want to go the cheap route you can use a large adjustable wrench (I have done this many times on the 3.8's) the tensioner has a square block on the opposite side of the pulley that you put the wrench on.
I also find it easier to pull the tire off and the plastic innerfender cover off. (Not the main innerfender cover)
have fun!

For what it is worth.
When I replaced the tensioner, the new part did not have the square block on the back end. I had to then either borrow/loan the release tool from Advance Auto, or buy one myself. I chose to buy it. Less than $20.
