Hey everybody, just found this forum and it looks pretty cool! I belong to a few Jeep ones so I am pretty familiar with the forum thing. Anyway, my grandfather's old truck was recently passed down to me, so I have to fix it up, what else would I do? Its an old DOT truck, a 1974 D100 with a 318 and 727 that has ~93,000 original miles. Everything works except the dash light. The truck sat ALOT over the last ~10 years but I am driving it more now that I have it. Now heres a few questions:
-The trans slips pretty bad between 2-3, also seems like it goes into 3rd pretty quick and wants to stay there. Unless I really punch it the engine just gets louder as the tranny slips. The fliud looks great though. I have been shifting it manually for the most part. Does this sound like it needs a tranny rebuild?
-What kind of oil do these old 318s like? It has some old straight 30W in it now.
-Is there a good place to get parts for these old trucks? All I have really found is JC whitney.
Thanks. My plan for this truck is to fix the rust and splash some fresh paint on it. Also paint and reuse the original wheels and find some radial tires for it (has original looking tube tires - knobies in the rear). When all said and done it should be a nice little driver/work truck.

Welcome aboard. Wish my grandfather passed me down a truck like that!
I'll pass on the tranny question since I've never owned an automatic.
As for oil, I have a 318 from 1973 and depending on the temperature range where you live, 10W-30 is excellent (here in Maine, where it can get pretty cold in the winter, I run 5W-30 in the winter, as the factory service manual lists 10W-30 down to -10 degrees, and it does occasionally get colder here). 30W is fine above freezing (you in Waco, Texas?), but colder than that and the oil will be too thick. Personally I like Pennzoil, would rate Valvoline just as high. Use a high-quality filter (I use NAPA 1515) and change your oil and filter every 5K miles or less--will really keep things in that motor clean and reduce wear.
I posted the oil specs. from the 1974 factory service manual here:
As for parts, I've really come to like RockAuto, but there are a lot of good outfits online. Steer clear of cheap-o parts, getting harder and harder to do that these days but certain brands or lines tend to be pretty reliable in that department. Price is often a good indicator, but not always.

Thanks for the replies! Megunticook thanks for the info on the oil, trying to squeeze as much life out of the original engine as possible. I live in Gig Harbor, Washington BTW
Here is the only pic I have postable for now. Don't mind my mug standing in the way, or the condition of the truck!!! In this pic it has a 4.3 v6, nv3500 tranny and np231 t case in the bed my roomate and I just snagged for his cj-6, its still getting jobs done!
Edit - why won't this board let me post pictures? It keeps saying that I can't post a URL even after clicking the IMG button.

Welcome to DT. Your trans need to be serviced. When you take it in tell them you would like to have it serviced and the bands adjusted. I have a 76 D200 with the 727 and had some shifting problems too. After the dealer made the adjustment, it works just like brand new again.

Thats good advice, above, bout getting your tranny serviced.....Ive seen torqueflites that wouldnt go into reverse, or a forward gear, and acted crazy, and all it took was a filter change, new fluid, and band adjustments.......Make sure you get the rite fluid for mopar trannys, its different. Good luck !!

Thanks for the info on te tranny, maybe it is something easy.
Yeah, you might want to get the tranny serviced/checked out by the guys that do this for a living... Worse comes to worse, you can get a rebuild for fairly cheap....
So far as oil, if you have great oil psi, yeah a 10-30 or 10-40 is fine. If it's a little on the low side (Like mine .... worn engine) might consider a 20-50...
A DOT truck? Looks like Montana DOT... By the orange color ;)
Hey, if you're ever somewhere near Spokane, look me up, I'll show you west-coasters how to drive in the snow! :D :D :D

Thanks for the kind words, lol only here people agree with me that the truck is a diamond in the rough! It actually looks worse in pictures. I am liking these old Dodges more and more, I'd like to fix this truck up to stock and find another old 4x4 one and put some 35s or something under it! Look at pictures of fixed up trucks on this site is really getting me excited to go to work on mine!
bherder - I like driving in the snow! :) This is in my Jeep a few weeks back:
Although NOBODY can drive in it on this side of the state, it is rediculis whenever it snows.
