My mom's van is having some sort of a problem. When she starts to drive the van will not get out of 2nd gear sometimes. When she pulls over puts the van in park and shuts off the car and then turns it back on all is ok and she can go above 2nd gear. What could be causing this besides needing a new transmission? She was saying that it was some sort of safety mechanism in the transmission. But it is beginning to happen all the time. sometimes it happens after she was driving for a while.

Advice appriciated. Thank you

Krystal

There is a problem with that transmission. If mom continues to ignore it, it is going to fail on her. I would suggest that she find a reputable transmission repair shop, and have it looked at.

By the way, my daughter's name is also Krystal. I've never seen anyone else spell it that way.

thanks. I was thinking maybe a sensor could be going out and they run about $17. So I told dad to check that first just in case. When my tranny went out on my taurus it just wouldn't go at all. But I know that the caravans are like the taurus the first thing to go out is the tranny. Thanks for the advice. The only problem is they just don't have the money. But better to find someone who has tranny knowledge than it to fail on them. They just bought this van like 2 months ago.

I know that it costs money to have someone look at it, but transmissions are complicated, it costs lots of money to just throw parts at them, and the cost of having the thing towed, and getting a ride back home when it fails on the side of the road can quickly exceed what it would cost to at least have a professional look it over and let you know what is wrong with it.
