My wife's dodge minivan a 1995 caravan has been out of action since Thanksgiving Day. Went out and cranked it up that morning and in less than 5 seconds cut it off to check the engine oil it was at proper level, tried to cranck it up again but was unabled to. Was told that the starter's solenoid was weak,so i replaced it,also replaced dist.cap&rotor now is turning the engine, spark is good ,checked the fuel pump and the auto shutdown relays with ohm meter at contacts 85 &86 and read about 83 ohms ther is also 12 volts present where they plug in. A friend suggested the pump is gone out since there is no hum when key is in the on pos. The price on new pump is pretty steep at this time is there an electrical connector outside the gas tank where to test for signal voltage from ASD relay? and could i apply 12 volts to connector side going to pump to hear pump being activated? Would it be safe to test this way?
I, would appreciate whatever advice you could give me.
Thank You Kindly Rick44 :help:

Welcome. I'm not sure if you can access it without lowering the gas tank, but there is a connector there. First off though-- the fuel pump should only hum for the first second after you turn the key to the on position at which point it will shut off unless you start the engine-- so see if that happens. You can also test using a fuel pressure gauge at the port on the injector rail.

Thank you for responding Rick99.I, had someone crawl under and there is no hum at all coming from the pump.So if i check for pressure at the port on injector rail and don't see any ,would that definetly tell the fuel pump is the culprit? At the connector under the fuel tank should i be seeing 12 volts from the relay?
Once again thank you for your advice. Rick44. by the way what was my post number? Forgot to write it down.

It wouldn't hurt to "verify" by checking for pressure, which should be about 58psi, but no fuel pump "hum" is usually considered a dead givaway. The pump should run for 1 second when you first turn the key to "run", every time. This does not condemn the pump, however. Check for any bad fuses, swap a different relay into the slot for the fuel pump relay. If that doesn't do it, then check for 12v at the pump harness at the tank (remember it will only pulse on for a second when the key is turned on). If you have the 12v, it's the pump. If no 12v, then there's a problem with the wiring somewhere.

Thank You guys, the problem has been resolved. As much as i tried to avoid it.hoping it would be something less expensive,it was the fuel pump after all. About $175. taxes inc. thanks Rick44
