i have an 06 ram 2500. it has the blue connector under the dash the dash. i also have the dodge harness to go to my brake controller so im good on the inside of the truck. on the outside at the back i have the 4 flat connector. my seven way has a 4 flat connector as well. is this all i need for my brake controller to work properly or am i missing something?

As you yourself stated: 7 wire plug. That's what you need, in the back probably tucked up around the spare tire. If you have the connector under the dash then the other end has to be there somewhere.Unless the factory put an adapter plug on your 7 wire that converts it from 7 to 4 wire.

Normally the factory does not put int he combo connectors, i.e. 7-pin and 4-way. Sounds to me like you bought this truck used. The previous owner probably put that combo unit in themselves. You can get a tester that you plug into the 7-pin or get a meter and check all of the pins to make sure all of the pins are working. Make sure you check the center pin, it's for the trailer brakes.

yes the truck was bought used. the connector for the brake controller was tie wrapped behind behind the harness of wires under the dash. the truck did not have a 7 way in the rear so im installing one that plugs in to flat 4way in the rear. what was tie wrapped under the dash looks to be factory. im wondering what else has to be done.

When I Did Mine I Didnt Have The Plug Under Dash I Installed A 7 Pin In The Back With The 4 Flat Plug But That Is Only For The Lights I Had To Run A Power Wire From The Battery To The Back 7 Pin That Connects To The 7 Pin Blue Mine Was Number 2 Positon I Think My Wire In The 7 Pin Center Was For Back Up Lights When I Got Done I Got A Test Light Not A Meter And Had Someone Step On The Brake Pedel To Check Voltage To Plug

I Bought The Harness For The Back Lights Under The Dash And A New 7 Pin Connector And I Didnt Need I Used My Old Wire From The Last Truck If You Need Hard Wire Help Let Me Know And I Will Go Out To Truck And Write It All Down

i see. i looked all under the truck for anything other than 4 flat connector and there was nothing else. i still have the original window sticker cuz the original owner traded it in with 5000 miles on it. it doesnt say it has a factory tow package. so i guess i have to run a wire from the 7way?

It would have been if the truck had the tow package...:)

You Have To Run A Wire Fron The Battery To The 7 Pin In The Back It Will Take Sometime Just Make Sure You Have Alot Of Cable Ties And Make Sure You Tie It Up Good Not To Hit Anything That Can Burn The Wire It Took Me Around 30 Min To Run The Wire My Truck Didnt Have The Plug Under The Dash So I Had To Hard Wire Not Bad But Under The Dash Neck Cramp

The Wire From The Battery I Had To Connect To Blue Wire In 7 Pin For My Camper Hook Up And Like I Said Use A Curcuit Tester Not A Metter

so then it is normal to have the factory plug under the dash and then stop at the fender plug. so i need the blue wire to run to the 7 way as well as 12 volts? sorry to ask so many questions but im sure many of you have done this before.

my suggestion is to go and get the repair manual off of hemitruckclub.com .. you will see it on the left side ..... do a target save as and download it first then open it up

go under wiring 8W - Trailer Tow ... it will give you the wiring layout you are looking for

Edited post .. I added the picture from the 06 manual for you to see ... click on it to make it bigger

Did you look at the thread I posted? It will tell you exactly what you need to do to make your set-up work. The blue wire is just for the brake controller.

Whoa! On my factory harness, the center pin is the backup lights. Brakes are bottom right, at about 5 o'clock.

You are right....my bad....the center is for the back-up lights or an aux input. Sorry about that folks.

I have the factory tow package, is the reverse and 12V hooked up from the factory?

If so where is the 12V fuse and what is its rating?

Take a look at this information in the link below. I believe all trucks are prepped for tow. That why there's blue plug under the dash and a trailer brake or tow fuse in the fuse box. Under the drivers side wheel well theres a connector that has all the wiring. If you have the tow pacakage the harness from this connector has the brake control and charge line that runs to the 7-way in the back. If your truck didn't have the tow package than the wires are there they just stop at this connector. You can find them and run them back to complete the 7-way plug.
