Yesterday I had the oil changed at iffy lube. This morning the service engine soon light came on. They cleaned the battery during the service. Any clues??

No point guessing, stop by your local auto parts store, and have them scan for codes. Write the codes down, and then you will know what the problem is.

Unless I'm wrong, the "Service Engine" light is just a reminder to do a service that pops on at preset mileage increments (not related to a problem). However, most smog facilities won't pass a vehicle with the service engine light, so if your smog is due soon I would take it back to the and ask them to reset the light.
This is different than the "Check Engine" light which pops on when there is a problem. Hope that helps.

^ You could very well be right about that, I didn't even really pay attention to the fact that he said service engine soon, and not check engine.

It would really help if you told us what kind of van we are talking about.
