Hi all.

I bought a used 2001 caravan three weeks ago. 150000km (90000miles) 3.3L engine, 4 speed transmission.

When putting the vehicule in R or D after a cold start(around 0C or 32F) , looks like tranny is slipping and jurking till I apply gas. Then, all seems to re-synch and goes well. Tranny changes gear smootly and consistently all the time.

I looked at the tranny oil and it is beautifull violet color.

Anyone else seen this problem? Is it really a problem or a 'feature'?

Toughts anyone?

Sounds like the fluid is draining back out of your converter. When you first start the engine, try slipping it in neutral for about 1 minute before you put it in R or D. Maybe need to change the tranny fluid and filter also. Fluid is supposed to be red not violet.

Interesting.

How much am I looking at?

Should I go to a Tranny shop or any Dodge dealer?

Thanks for the quick reply.

All you have to do to change the fluid is drop the trans pan. 6 qts of ATF+4 fluid and a new filter should cost you about $10-15 bucks and about 45 mins time. You will pay from $65-100 bucks if you have it done. Save yourself some money and make it a DIY project.

Will probably get it done since I am not a mechanic at all and don't have the tools.

Forgot to tell you. After starting cold, if I let the engine running for 5 minutes, I do not see the problem expressed above. Sound like what you are saying in post#2.

Does that extra detail confirm your original diagnostic?

P.s.Nice truck Dude!

Etienne,
Since you mentioned you would probably have someone else do the tranny service, make SURE they use ONLY ATF+4 transmission fluid. Don't settle for anything else.

Yes I second that on the ATF+4

Don't let anyone put in anything with additives or anything.

absolutely nothing only ATF+4! anything else will cause your transmission to deteriorate very quickly. dont let anyone talk you into it either. believe me they will try
