My 1985 Dodge Ram 350 recently started doing a wierd thing. At first click of the key (turning the ignition on but not engaging the starter) the ammeter needle pegs to discharge, then when I turn the next click to start the engine and it starts the needle pegs in the other direction to maximum charge. In the 20 years I have owned this truck, the needle never moved any more than 1/4" off center. The alternator is charging and I replaced the voltage regulator. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Check your voltage limiter on the back of your instrument cluster.

Check the output with a DVOM to see if you aren't getting a bogus reading on your gauge
