My back up lights weren't working and the truck started in gear (86 /6 auto) so i replaced the switch on the transmission still have the same problem there is power to the switch and i've tried turning the connector around still nothing it's confusing the hell out of me anyone know whats going on with this thing?

Pull the 3 pin connector off the switch and short the 2 outside sockets of the connector together with a hunk of wire. Key must be on and see if the backup lights work.

ok ill try that and i was looking at the wiring diagrams in the Haynes manual and it looks like there is another switch before (i think) the one on the tranny do you think that might be causing the problem im more concerned with the neutral safety end of it the last thing i want is this thing getting turned over in gear and crashing into something or someone

The 2 outer wires are for the backup lights, the center one is the neutral safety switch... It connects to the starter relay and is probably what your see in the manual.
You could have a mis-adjusted gearshift linkage, a worn linkage or a defective switch and/or wiring. The first is most likley if the the truck starts and the backup lights come on and go off when shifting to reverse.

Could also be that someone has jumpered the starter relay to keep it grounded all the time. People will do this rather than fix the neutral safety switch or wiring. Look at this diagram, the neutral safety switch wiring is highlited in yellow. Pull the wire/plug off the starter relay and see if the truck will start and/or in gear. Relay should look like this on the left inner fender under the hood.
The "G" terminal (Yellow Hilte) is the one that works with the neutral safety switch...pull the wire off of it or see if someone has another wire installed in place of the original.
