is there anyway around the computer? or how to make it better?

The Mopar Performance ignition kit will work just fine. I put one on the wife's 5th ave. several years ago and had no more problems with it. Summit, Jegs, And Mancini Racing has them. :gr_patrio

Do you have smog testing there? If so, you might want to make sure that whatever you do, isn't going to screw you over when they shove their probe up your tailpipe..
If not, then you can pretty much replace the whole thing with a 'regular' ignition system. I'm sure there would be emission 'loose ends' to tie up, and I'm sure someone here knows how/what to do with those. (I've never had the pleasure..)

Jegs part# 312-p3690426. You do need the distributor. All I've done to the wife's car since I put this kit on it has been spark plugs and a timing chain. :gr_patrio

You can probably find a truck in the junkyard w/o the computer that you can rob the electronic ignition setup off of. Then you can just upgrade the dizzy and the module later on as you have the money.

so i don't need the dizzy right away?
and would i have to plug some of the carb vacum hoses?
Speed Dragon

Might be one or 2 outlets that can be plugged, most should be the same though. And yeah, you can keep your dizzy for now, as long as it has vacuum advance.

no it does not have vacum advance, i dont know how the advnce works on it?

The spark control computer controls the advance. :gr_patrio

i get that, but how does it adjust it with

Not really sure how it does it, but it does it electronically somehow. To convert to regular electronic ignition, you'll need a dizzy w/ vacuum advance.

just curious because i have a factory service manual for it and it doesn't say how that i can find, and i found another problem with the car today, my steeper motor for the air/fuel mixture on the ack of the carb was shorting out so i unplugged it and the the truck ran better,
do i need it plugged in or is it fine to run without it?

I have seen post and threads about installing a GM HEI
does that set up replace the dreaded SCC

Yes it will, I had a computer hanging off my air filter too. This is what I did. I went to the junk yard and got a distributor off a non computer controlled truck, that had vacuum advance. Get a distributor with only one plug on it, not a dual plug one. Dont worry about getting the ECU out of the truck. Go to the auto parts store and get a 4 wire GM HEI module (1975 C10 should work) mine was about $16.00. You'll also need a new ignition coil, as it will be getting a full 12v all the time now, instead of just during start.
I've had this setup for a while now, seems to run better.

I am considering converting from my spark control computer/distributor to an electronic mopar distributor w/vacuum advance and using the GM HEI module to run it as has been done here. Will any 12v coil work with this conversion (such as part#GC122 at Advance Auto)? Also, in the wiring diagram, should there be a ground from the negative side of the coil? Or does it just go straight to the HEI module? And should a capacitor of any type be installed (such as part#ARC4 from Advance Auto), and if so where?
Thank you all, very good information here!

Nice thread and I'm thinking of loosing my computer too, I did sucessfully convert a '69 Charger with a 440 over to electronic ignition - I robbed the electric Distrib and the wiring harness that plugs into the mopar box. Ran the wires and worked great.
On my 87 Ram, I have sitting around an old electic Distributor off a '71 340 (with vac advance) and have an MSD 6AL.
My plan is to (eventually) drop the computer and install the distrib and hook it to the MSD and MSD to the coil. Shoud work fine (did this to my '76 Cordoba with a 400 and it works sweet), and nice to have a rev limiter...specially when someone wants to borrow the truck - "it won't seem to get over 4000 rpm!?!?!?".

ive got most all the parts i need for the conversion, i got a new distibutor, wire harness, do i need an orange box(ecm)????
what does the HEI bypass???
ive seen a drawn pic but cant find it anymore
i have the new wire harness but how does that get wired in?
it came with no instuctions on how to hook it up
i plan on doing the HEI conversion at the same time

i get that, but how does it adjust it with
Usually there is a sensor mounted on the block (on chevy's, it's on the block near the starter) that senses when the engine is spark knocking/pinging. It (the computer) will then adjust the timing to compensate.
