I recently replaced the lift pump after having received some troubleshooting help
from the local auto parts store. I still can't get it started. If I bump the ignition
the new pump provides fuel but the engine still acts like no fuel is being sent through the injector pump. I'm getting the following codes. I'm wondering if I could have complicated issues through the various attempts to get it started. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

1693
1689
1698

230 - I've manually tested the relay and it tests ok.

P0216 Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure.
High fuel supply restriction, low fuel pressure or possible
wrong or incorrectly installed pump keyway.

P1689 No Communication Between ECM and Injection Pump Module.
Data link circuit failure between ECM and fuel injection pump. Low power, engine derated, or engine stops.

P1693 DTC Detected in PCM/ECM or DTC Detected in ECM.
A Companion DTC was set in both the ECM and PCM.

P1698 No CCD Messages received from PCM.
Bus communication failure to PCM. A Companion DTC
was set in both the ECM and PCM.

Try taking a 19mm open end wrench and loosen the injector fittings on #1,#3,#4, & #5 cylinders and do 2 "bump"/start cycles. If there's fuel on the fittings, tighten them back and try to start the motor for 10 seconds then wait a few minutes then try again. Mine started after tightening the wet fittings on the first try...missed and smoked for a minute then cleared right up.
Keep at least 1/4 tank of fuel in the tank to cool and lube the injector and lift pumps.

Thanks for the reply. It seems that after cracking the banjo bolts at the injector
pump all I needed to do was wait a few hours (maybe remaining air in lines bled out??). I got a rough start this afternoon. Drove down to my shop and had a mechanic buddy clear the DTCs. We'll see if they come back. I'm testing a theory that these faults were all a result of repeated attempts to get it started.

Thanks again.

98 1/2 to 02 had fuel pressure problem with them. low fuel pressure will kill the injection pump.check your fuel pressure cranking about 8-10psi and running 15 to 18psi is good. ;)

The lift pump fuel pressure needs to be known...at least 10 psi at idle, 15 psi is better.
The kits at most auto parts stores work just fine, they also work on GM fuel injection and old freon 12 low side pressure ports...pics in my gallery.
